Coax or Cat-5 Installation?

Hi All

I recently got Uverse installed and technician used Coax. My house is pre-wired for both Coax and CAT-5. Which is better to use? Can I ask them to re-do the connection to Cat-5. I did not get their VOIP service? Is there a benefit in getting that?

As long as your coax is in good condition, it will ultimately give a little more bandwidth than cat 5. So you should be ok.

Was there a reason they didn't use the Cat5 if it was already there?

They can most likely rewire you to the Cat5, but they'll probably charge you for that.

As far as which is better, I think the jury is still out.

VoIP is not available in all areas yet. No advantage other than combining costs on the UV bill. Right now VoIP is the same price as their landline (with same features except onscreen Caller ID). Just depends on what you want or need in a home phone.

the benifit of using cat5 is for future up grading and its faster to trouble shoot ( no spliters all ran to the rg in most cases) coax is half duplex cat5 is full duplex, the coax would have alot of collisions. computer networks years ago used them

Everytime I say Cat5 is better, I get yelled at by people who have coax and have *no problems*.

And in my experience, coax has caused nothing but problems. My choice would be Cat5, but I didn't get a choice...

if we had collisions on the backfeed i guess we would all be ripping out coax lol

the tranmission (coax) is bi-directional at diff frequency is all .. (why the rg6 from nid to rg3800 is fine)

did your speed and house run better after they replaced your rg6 feed to cat5e sp2d ?? (i bet it was the same )

bad cable = bad cable wether it be cat5e or coax both have to be terminated correctly...

pros and cons to both cables and should be used in the proper application ..

for most homes one or the other or both is fine imho (standard disclaimer apply to zip 084 lol )

I wasnt knocking coax

I said I liked cat5 for furture upgrades( more and more things are going to use ethernet) and that it was home ran to the rg not one feed split at diffent places all over the house

so now your all mad cause i pointed out the fact coax doesnt cause collisions ????

if u would read up on hpna v3 u would see the benefits of it imho..

aka hpna v3 can go 600m and cat 5 only 100m (distance) of course your mileage may vary..

sorry u took it all personal but u are flat wrong u did knock it imho

like i said pros and cons to both cat 5 and coax in the at&t iptv system imho

I've seen randyl's stats and his all-coax is perfect; my house, it's a totally different story. I'm now a mix, but probably more people have coax than Cat5 and are doing just fine with their service. There have been people who have posted who are all Cat5 and that doesn't eliminate all problems either. IMO each residence is unique.
