Crashing since "upgrading" to HD

We ordered HD sevice yesterday. We had hooked up a year-old 37-inch Sharp Aquos to the Moto DVR box via HDMI. Now we get a great picture but periodic box crashes and restarts that take 5 minutes or so every hour or so. Is this the HDMI issue everyone is talking about? Is there a solution other than going with component cables? I just spent good money on an overpriced GE HDMI cable ($27 at Target, ouch!), so I hate to see that wasted.

Try this, disconnect the hdmi cable from the stb and then unplug the stb from the ac outlet for 20 seconds. Plug in the ac cable and then after about 5 minutes plug in the hdmi cable. That resolved some other issues with hdmi maybe it will resolve that one. Let us know if that solves the problem.

Bottom line is: TV shouldn't crash. Hopefully this is does the trick.

Call in, sounds like they need to look at the line. HD uses more bandwith than standard SD. Is you tv shutting of on you, or is the box itself reseting itself.

I am having the same issue. I was told by a technician that HDMI doesn't always work with U-Verse. This is unacceptable to me. I paid top dollar for a Samsung TV and there is an appreciable difference between watching TV with RCA cables and HDMI. If this doesn't get resolved by AT&T I'm going back to DISHNetwork. The picture was outstanding with Dish's DVR and HDMI cable.

Well, did you try RC's suggestion above, it's designed to retrain the HDMI connection between the TV and DVR/STB so that it can work properly. Luckily mine has been faultless since I got Uverse last July.

Yep, as Chris said, you need to try RC's suggestion.

My friend complained about the same problem, the handshake issue with HDMI on her brand new 32" Sharp Aquous HDTV. I told her about the workaround and she tried it and has not had one problem since trying it. That was months ago.

Why would you use RCA cables? Component cables work just fine. And, the picture quality is just as good as HDMI. The only difference between HDMI and Comonent is that HDMI can do 1080p (most HDTV is 1080i or 720p, anyway) and HDMI can carry digital audio. Well, we already know that digital audio can't be passed through HDMI on the U-Verse DVR's.

So, all you're losing is the lack of bulk from the HDMI cable.

I have had U-Verse for over one year. I have two Samsung LCD's one 2006 the other 2008. The 2006 stopped handshaking with the Motorla box after what appears to have been an overnite update about 6 months ago. All attempts were made thru tech support to establish communication, but other than starting in component video mode then switching to hdmi mode, handshaking will not occur. As of 2 weeks ago, my newer high end Samsung now has handshaking issues with the DVR. Upon cold startup the Samsung has a clicking sound (Relay noise) and takes approximately three minutes to startup after handshaking occurs. There is definately a HDMI issue with UVerse Motorola hardware. I asked the latest field tech about the newer Cisco boxes and he tells me CIsco is not available in LA area. I an curious if Cisco users have the same problems. As far as component vs hdmi. There is no comparison. Component is a 10 year step backwards which is unacceptable to the point of considering going back to Direct TV...

Here is a solution that has resolved the handshake issue for a lot of people. Unplug the hdmi cable from the stb but leave it plugged into the tv. Then do a soft reboot of the stb by pushing and holding the power button until the lights blink. After about 5 minutes reconnect the hdmi cable to the stb, that should solve the handshake issues.

Been there, done that six months ago. HDMI issues are rampet with Uverse They (ATT) needs to spend some time to resolve the issue. There are alot of Samsung sets out there that I am sure have the same problem, but are told use component, they wont know the difference. This is an unacceptable solution and backwards thinking. Resolving handshaking issues are more involved then unplugging and waiting 5 minutes each time you power up the system. ATT continues to ignore the problem. Does anyone with Cisco systems have these issues out there???

I had the same problem except sometimes it took an hour to get system back up and running. I alson had trouble with my computer going down and getting the message that the unit was too far from the computer (it was 6 inches away). I had several phone disscussions with the tech's and a home visit from one and nothing solved the problems I finally solved the problem by contacting TIME-WARNER and getting rid of U-VERSE I have had no more problems and I have a better picture on the tv.

Wow, you have been going through this living hell, and unacceptable situation, for a whole year and have not yet switched? Why not? Still waiting for that Cisco box that can't be used in LA? Heard Directv is offering free equipment and everything else including a 2 year contract. You are welcome to come back and vent in the U-verse forum, such as Ratfink, after you have switched. Whatever service you have you are destined to be unhappy with it. Sure hope all that the space junk doesn't hit the Directv satellites.
