Got U-verse on 12-18 and hooked up the DVR to a Vizio VX37L HDTV using an HDMI cable. For several weeks this combo worked just fine. I have some old VHS tapes that I needed to sort through so I also hooked up a JCV HR-A61U VCR via composite video and audio cables. At this point the DVR started to lock up or reboot each time I would turn it on with the TV. Just to be sure I disconnected the VCR and sure enough the problems went away. Skip ahead a few weeks and I now add a SONY DVP-NS72HP CD/DVD player. A HDMI cable is included with this CD/DVD player so I hooked it up to the second HDMI input on the HDTV. With two devices connected HDMI everything works great.
At some point I seem to remember someone mentioned a timing issue might be at the root of the so called HDMI problem. It might be the HDTV is taking too long to open the HDMI port if it has other devices to deal with at the same time. What this really proves I don't know but I thought I would share it and maybe save someone else some problems.

It still doesn't fix the problem of no Dolby over the audio, however.

I'm referring to the "solution" posted in this thread... it does not solve the problem, for me, permanently. It helps, maybe, but not a solution. There is no solution for existing equipment; existing equipment is faulty and I'm begging AT&T, every chance I get, to fix this and get the fix out to people who need it. I'm happy with AT&T service from the programming side, but their hardware is substandard (I have many current issues that AT&T "fixes" by telling me to reboot my STBs and reset settings that get changed at random).
