When hooking up a vcr to the stb, when recording do you have to stay on that channel? Or can you set the channel on the vcr and switch away through the stb?
You have to set the vcr to either channel 3 or 4 depending on your location in the U. S. and set it to the time you want it to record. You will also have to put the stb on the channel you want the vcr to record other wise the vcr is going to record whatever channel it is seeing from the stb. Keep in mind that after 8 hours the stb goes into standby mode. The stb does not change the channel automatically.

if you are somewhat adventuresome there is a nice solution for doing this. You can run SageTV on your pc. You need a Hauppage tuner card (SD) and a USB-UIRT device. You can get more details here:http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3
The USB-UIRT allows the computer to change the Uverse channels. The Hauppage card will record the analog output from the Uverse box. A small program (STB alive) keeps the uverse box from turning off. This permits you to record from HBO, record shows onto the computer hard drive, etc. I was using Sage with Dish before I moved to Uverse so I already had all the stuff I needed. You can find hardware bundles at the SageTV store if this is of interest.
