Ordered a set of HDMI from monoprice.com and they just arrived today.
Man, those are some really stiff cables!!! ![]()
Had one heck of a time getting the cables connected, mostly because of where and how the inputs are at on our TV and how the TV is setup. Had to remove the speakers and lean the TV forward to get it hooked up. Hooking it in to the STB, that was the easy part. ![]()
The very first thing I noticed was a huge change in the color. I went into the menu and noticed the blue was really a vivid blue, but I also noticed the image overall, seemed to be much softer! Didn't much care for that.
Then, I put on the channel my husband had been watching and the color was terrible. There was way too much red!! I go into the settings on the TV to adjust the color and I can't adjust it because the options are not there!
Disconnect HDMI, try component and color settings are there so I can adjust them if I wanted. Go figure, when helping my friend set up her new HDTV, component wouldn't let her adjust the red on her set, but HDMI did and almost the exact opposite for us! (we had a good laugh about that!
)
So, we unhooked the HDMI from the STB and went back to component.
For us, component works much better than HDMI. Sharper picture with better detail, yet the colors are good without jumping out at you as if all the colors were of a neon sort.
Mind you, not complaining, but I just thought I would let folks know what happened with our experience. It could very well be a difference in the TV's or it could be something as others have said, something with Uverse and the STB. I don't know and won't make a claim to even guess what it could be.
All I know is it simply did not work for us, so we went back to what did work for us. ![]()

I already have a thought of what to do with it.
No, it isn't what you might be thinking either!!!! ![]()
Seriously, I'm sure the cables are just fine, just didn't work out for us.

Pip:
Had a similar experience, and other wierd issues, on my Sony HD with cables from monoprice.com. The cables are great. Went back to component. Keep the cables. Could be a "fix" down the road.

One thing you didn't mention is what TV you had and how old. On my Panasonic TH42PZ80U, the exact opposite was true. On component the picture was softer and I did not like it and went back to my HDMI cable. Either way I could get into my menu and able to change anything I wanted. HD is just fabulous on the HDMI cable and I don't have the HDMI 'problem'-my remote turns on the TV first, then the 2 seconds later the STB comes on. This has to be an STB update for HDMI as it didn't do this on the component cables.

I'm afraid to ask!You could get an Xbox or Playstation 3 and use it for that, if your TV has another HDMI...or some newer DVD players use HDMI, right? I don't know as mine is a 1st Gen junker (slow Toshiba!).

Chris, it's a Dell 42" plasma that we have had for just over 3 years.
Now it's funny you should mention how your TV/STB operate with the AT&T remote, because on component, that is exactly how mine is working. TV first, then the STB a couple seconds later.
I know I have seen folks say they get a better picture with component and I always thought, for the best picture, isn't HDMI supposed to be the standard for HDTV? I guess that isn't always the case, or as my hubby said, perhaps it's the differences in the TV.
Like I mentioned, my friend bought a 32" Sharp Aquos TV and with component, there was no way to adjust the color. Red was nowhere to be found. As soon as I hooked up the HDMI cable, the picture was complete, reds and all and with a few adjustments she wanted, her picture is fantastic.
So, I don't think, to be completely fair, that we can place all of the blame on PQ for HD, squarely on Uverse's shoulders. Seems to be other factors are somewhat involved. ![]()
Spd, no Xbox for me or another DVD player, at least right now. The one we have works fine. ![]()
And with my back, can you picture me trying to even stand up straight enough to play a Wii????

Not to hijack, but SPEAKING OF Wii (hmm...all caps makes it World War II...interesting!)...
Comc*ast is offering a FREE Wii with a new customer 2-year committment (uh, contract). Guess their free HDTV offer didn't go well.

I thought you'd approve since it was your favorite ex-provider! ![]()
Now, back to what you already have planned for the HDMI...

Nah, wrong company. I liked Comcast, save for their prices. I had TWC, who I was most happy to kick to the curb in exchange for Uverse.

The picture on my Mitsubishi 56" is great with component or HDMI both. I can't see any difference in either case.

The only problem that I've had with HDMI is it seems like the colors aren't right. At times there seems be a lot of red. This didn't happen all the time but enough for me to try components for a while too if the color balances out better.
That was the very first thing we noticed. Way too much red in the picture and as I said, I could not adjust. Even if I could have adjusted it, I was concerned that perhaps there might be problems down the road and would have to readjust the colors like I had with component, so I didn't want to be fooling with that all the time. It's why we decided to just go back to component and stay there.

I bought my HDMI cable online at mycablemart.com and on their website they have a tutorial about HDMI. There they had a link to the HDMI standards group which stated that TV's over about one year old might have problems w/HDMI cables. It turns out many manufacturers were not implementing all the standards for HDMI in their equipment. In the last year, most manufacturers have been fully implementing the current HDMI standards. This may make sense of your 3 yr old Dell working poorly and my new (5 month model age) Panasonic working great on HDMI.

Chris, you may very well be correct, but I just had to give it a try. ![]()
Maybe when we get our next HDTV, it will work okay. For now component works great for us. ![]()
