No HD Audio

I just had U-Verse installed and am extremely disappointed with the set-up in my Home Theater room and am hoping someone out there has a good idea.

Here's the scoop: if I hook up the optical audio from the U-verse receiver to my Sony Home Theater (model # DAV-HDX274) system I get no Audio on HD channels - weird right? This means in the room where I have dedicated to watch big (108" projector screen) HD movies I am forced to watch standard def channels and use the zoom feature to fill the 16:9 aspect ratio or have the side bars and watch them in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Alternatively, I can hook up RCA audio and get the benefits of the HD picture but awful audio.

The installer tried switching receivers and it appears to be a compatability issue. The optical audio does work in my other room which has a Sony receiver (model # STR-DE885).

I'm open to any solution, I'd hate to switch back to Dish just because of this. I'd even spend a little to replace my Home Theater-in-box system if I knew for certain it was compatable.
