The green light on my 2WIRE 3800HGV router is usually a steady light if the TV is not on and also if I am not recording. Today the green light has been flashing very fast and the TV is not on and I am not recording anything. What is causing this? Will it cause my router to burn out quicker (this is my third 2wire router in one year)? Do I need to do something to correct the problem or will it correct itself?
Thanks,
steven

Steven, are you talking about the local ethernet light on the RG?
If so, after some power problems in my apartment last year, I've had the same thing happen. Almost looks like it is stuck.
Short history.......had electricians here as we had issues in the kitchen, but the TV and all the equipment is on the same curcuits, so everytime they did something and the power was **bleep** off then turned back on, the DVR would be going on and off. The RG was on a different circuit, so I knew the DVR was the one reacting. ![]()
Afterwards, that was when I noticed the problem. I was used to the ethernet light flashing when live TV was on or when recording, but when not, it would almost come to a stop, just flashing every so often.
I went through a whole series of things with some help from several other members. Here is that thread, but you really do not need to read thru all that. ![]()
What I do now when that happens, is do a soft reset of the DVR, hold the power button in for about 5 seconds till the lights flash. IF, for some reason that does not work, unplugging the power cord from the back of the DVR for about 15 or 20 seconds, usually does.
Sometimes, I will have to reset the STB in the bedroom too, but not too often. Most times, one of the first 2 steps above will work to get the light back to the way it should be. ![]()
I've gotten into the habit of looking at that light when I know the TV if off and will ask my husband, am I recording? Invariably, the answer is yes. ![]()
Steven, AFAIK, that shouldn't cause the RG to die prematurely. I've had the service for a year and still have the same RG, but I wonder, could you be having power problems in your house? Is the RG on a surge protector?

Dennis, take a look at the local ethernet light when the DVR is recording or you are watching live TV. It blinks very rapidly.
VOD doesn't make that happen. ![]()

In the first place, I'm not at all certain that the home ethernet light flashing quickly is a problem. You didn't state WHICH green light is flashing but, for example, in my case, the desktop computer AND the computer room TV are both connected to the ethernet output from the RG. So if I'm on the Internet with the computer OR if the computer room TV set is turned on this particular green light will flash rather rapidly. In any case....these are little LED's and the flashing does not hurt them.

I never watch the lights, just care if they are all green (blinking or not). ![]()
Or until there's a problem and something isn't working...

just turning the stb and tv on made the ethernet light blink fast. live tv and vod. turned them off and it's now back to a very slow blink. no way to take a picture of a blinking light i don't think...

That observation is correct!
You for sure never want to see NO light for ports that are connected, and NEVER a Red SERVICE or BROADBAND light.![]()

Well, it concerned me, because for months prior to our electrical problems, everything had been working fine.
After that, I noticed the light constantly blinking, and that was when nothing was on at all,no TV, no computer and not recrding anything either.
I also noticed a change in the behavior of the DVR when we would first turn it on after the electrical issues. The DVR used to come on right away, and as usual, the TV would follow till it warmed up, about a minute later.
Afterwards, it seemed to take a lot longer for the DVR to turn on and the TV would come on first. And no, I do not use HDMI. I use component to connect. And, as best as I can recall, there were no updates being pushed at that time.
To me, when the light is flashing, it means something is being transmitted. Plus I know, as an always on connection, there will always be something going on, but when you are not using any of your equipment, (live TV, computer) that light shouldn't be flashing all the time, at least it was always that way for me, till the electrical problem.
Now remember, many of you guys are using wireless, I'm not. Everything is disabled on my end....wireless, HPNA, and USB. Many of you have Uvoice. I don't. You also have HPNA enabled. Again, I don't, so for me, the behavior of that local ethernet light was not normal.
I was just giving Steven a way to maybe get the light back to where it should be. Perhaps he too had some power problems. ![]()

Nothing to worry about. As others have said just because you aren't recording or watching anything doesn't mean that something isn't going on in the background. It very well could be an update of some sort.
Nobody here knows when or what updates are scheduled (some have an idea of when to expect THDVR but that's it).
As long as the light is green and the service is working like normal then you're good to go. A flashing LED will not cause problems with the RG.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you folks...had to replace the keyboard on my laptop. Regarding the constant flashing of the green light. I did the soft reboot on the DVR and lost all live TV but still had ability to watch recorded programs via the DVR. Could not get the live TV back so called att technical and they did a reboot on their end and everything came back. During their reboot my ratio settings were put to 4:3 so I had to change them back to i1080 otherwise everything is back to normal and the ethernet light only blinks when the TV is on or when I am recording. Don't know what caused the issue in the first place and it will probably remain one of the great mysteries of life.
Thanks for all the replies.

Did you recently have any power issues Steven, power going on and off several times or something else you were made aware of? Could have been like my issues, power problems.
Either way, glad you are back to working properly. ![]()
