Hi- I have researched this topic, but most of the questions were asked in 2010, so I was wondering if the information has changed.
Something happened to my current dvr (I keep getting a message that service is temporarily unavailable on all my tvs)- I called ATT and they said the receiver has some issues and they will send a replacement.
My question (my daughter's question), can we transfer our saved recording to the new receiver or another device?
Any help or answers would be appreciated. After all, this is my daughter's "for the love of everything that is good in this world - her life depends on it" question. Yes, very dramatic! lol
Thanks!

Tell your daughter to pick out a cemetary plot, because the answer is still no.
Now if you had the inferior Dish service, you could hook an external hard drive to your DVR to back up your recordings and/or add more space for recordings.

When Uverse initially rolled out in SE Michigan a friend had the service and for some reason his dvr was going to be replaced. He backed up his recording on to DVDs. But since ATT instituted the DRM that ability went away. It is a copyright issue and I don't see it being relaxed.

The only problem with that is you would have to do it in realtime. In other words, if you have 150 hours of recordings, it would take 150 hours to transfer it to DVD or Bluray.
You should still be able to transfer over a component connection and optical audio though. If it's scrambled there is a device that you run the green connector of the component through. http://www.xdimax.com/grex/grex.html

I think there are those who would be willing to transfer the recordings in realtime and then others would complain. But did know it is possible to transfer them via component cables, I just left that out. I didn't know it was possible to scramble a component signal though.

There are Macrovision protection specs for Component connections, but they are only very rarely used.
To my knowledge, the U-Verse STBs do not implement any protection on the Component outputs.

Too bad they don't have consumer DVD recorders that do high-speed dubbing like the old double casette tape decks, then you could put the STB on fast forward and save some time.![]()

It a flavor of MacroVision ... it alters the sync signals (all sync is carries on the green line). It's essentially the same thing on composite and S-Video.

Just in case anyone reads this hoping for an answer, I was able to to save my recordings via "the old fashioned way".
We still have an old tube tv. I was able to hook up the vcr/dvd combo recorder to the set and uverse box via two sets of av cables and record, in real time, to a blank dvd. From what I have read, using older equipment is the way to go for this task until AT&T makes it a little easier.
Yes it's tedious, but it gets the job done for the recordings that are important to us.
Here is the link to the set-up instructions:

Thanks to all who took the time to answer, and to Computer Joe, guess we won't be needing those plots after all! ![]()
