This question covers all 4 equipment sections. Do you have to pack up and ship all the equipment back -- BBU, Gateway, STBs, remotes? Or do they let you dispose (or keep) it because it has become obsolete versus what they give out nowadays?

When you cancel, you will be emailed instructions for returning your equipment along with a list of what equipment needs to be returned. The equipment is taken to a UPS center that handles equipment returns where it is packed and returned to AT&T at no cost to you. The gateway, DVR and STB's must be returned. The BBU is yours to keep, and does not need to be returned.

When I terminated my Uverse all they wanted back was the Gateway and the STBs, no power cords, no remotes, and there is no packing. You just take them to a participating UPS store and they will pack them and ship them, no cost to you.
Not sure about the BBU as I did not have the VOIP service so no BBU was required. I doubt they would want that back, but you never can tell until you call and cancel.

They do not want to deal with shipping lead-acid batteries back: The weight. The hazardous material. The short lifetime.

I had been assuming that if U-Verse doesn't want the BBU back, then perhaps it could be used for the modem that the cable company supplies or for other purposes. However in taking a closer look at the back of the BBU (Rev A), there are apparently 2 non-removable wires attached to the back: one is the BBUs power cord which is plugged into my surge protector and the other is the power from the BBU going to the back of U-Verse's Gateway. Maybe there is also the issue of correct voltage and wattage so that the BBU can't be used for anything else but U-Verse.
Anyone have any experience or comments?
