Well, Telus, the Canadian company who is the only other TV provider in North America who offers this feature, requires a tech visit, $100 fee, and then charge $5/month for the XBox 360 to be used as an STB. The normal fee for an STB is $10/month. Is that a better deal than what U-verse is offering?

So because someone cheats on their wife more than you, it makes your infidelity ok?

TV Technology is a pretty repespected publication, so I can't explain how they could have gotten it that wrong. I'm not suggesting it is correct, I just think what they reported is notable...

Huh?
Does that mean that you prefer the U-verse deal, the Telus deal, or you can't decide since you asked a question?

Telus also allows their customers to purchace their own DVRs and STBs, in exchange to eliminate rental fees...

It is very strange especially the quoting of a price for the download, but AT&T posted on the U-verse Facebook page that the information in it's press release is correct. Very strange indeed.

The point is that both are bad deals. The fact that another company is charging more doesn't make AT&Ts deal any more palatable.

The facebook source is only quoting the information that they already have, even if the download option existed they wouldn't be able to confirm it. Especially now.

The $5/month fee still applies to the XBox 360, which the customer owns. They do offer a free XBox 360 to internet customers who commit to a 2 year contract.

I was just pointing out that if your objective is to eliminate the monthly rental fees, purchasing the equipment is a better option than using an Xbox 360 as a STB via Telus...

Attached is a very informative internal memo leaked on another forum.
"Direct from the internal Memo.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
The following are some frequently asked questions concerning the U‐verse TV on Xbox 360. These questions are provided to
help you and the customer understand the functionality of the Xbox 360 as a U‐verse STB.
1. Q: Can I do all the same things with Xbox 360 U‐verse as a normal U‐verse HD Receiver?
A: Yes, except that your Xbox 360 cannot act as a DVR.
2. Q: Do I have to have an Xbox 360 Live account to use U‐verse on my Xbox 360?
A: You only have to have an Xbox 360 Live account upon installation of the U‐verse TV on Xbox 360 service. You
don’t have to maintain an Xbox 360 Live account after that to use the U‐verse TV on Xbox 360 service. There are
two different kinds of Xbox 360 Live account: Silver (free) and Gold which has a monthly fee.
3. Q: The remote control that came with the Xbox 360 Kit stops working, how can I get a new one?
A: First the customer should check to ensure that the remote control has new batteries, if it does and the remote
control still doesn’t work, have the customer call AT&T at 1‐800‐ATT‐2020 to order a new remote control.
4. Q: Should the customer keep the installation CD that came in the Xbox 360 Kit after the U‐verse client has already
been installed on the Xbox 360?
A: Yes, you should leave the CD in case the customer needs to reinstall the U‐verse/Carbon client at some point in
the future.
5. Q: Can a customer be in gaming mode and still watch TV?
A: No. A customer can only play games in gaming mode and can only watch TV in TV/U‐verse mode.
6. Q: What does a customer do if they don’t want U‐verse TV on Xbox 360 anymore?
A: Call AT&T at 1‐800‐288‐2020 to cancel U‐verse TV on Xbox 360 service.
7. Q: How does a customer uninstall U‐verse from their Xbox 360 (uninstall the U‐verse client)?
A: The customer should only uninstall the U‐verse Software client if they have cancelled their service and no longer
wish to use the U‐verse TV on Xbox 360 service. If the customer has cancelled their U‐verse TV on Xbox 360 service
and wish to uninstall the U‐verse client, the steps can be found in the manual for step by step instructions on how to
uninstall the U‐verse Client if desired.
8. Q: Does the size of the Xbox 360 hard drive make a difference?
A: No we only utilize 40MB (megabytes) and the Xbox 360 hard drive traditionally has a few gigabits.
9. Q: Parental Controls on the Xbox 360: Do the settings of the Xbox 360 console apply to the U‐verse application?
A: No. U‐verse parental control settings (procedure for setting up is the same but each STB can be configured
differently) are the same across all STBs in the household. The steps for setting up parental controls to limit On
Demand and Pay Per View purchases are included further in the user guide.
NOTE: Xbox 360 parental controls setting (set through the Xbox 360 Dashboard) affect only the gaming side of the
console. There is no synchronization between the gaming side and the U‐verse side of the Xbox 360.
10. Q: The Xbox 360 has a hard drive; can it be used as a Digital Video Recorder (DVR)?
A: No, the Xbox 360 cannot be used as a DVR.
11. Q: Can the Xbox 360 access content on the Total Home DVR?
A: Yes, the Xbox 360 is equivalent to a U‐verse HD Receiver including Total Home DVR capability.
12. Q: Can movies downloaded from the Xbox 360 video store be accessed from the U‐verse application?
A: No. In the U‐verse mode of operation, only U‐verse content is available. To access content obtained from the
Xbox 360 video store, the user must leave the U‐verse application completely and utilize the gaming console
Dashboard.
Keep in mind that AT&T U‐verse also has a large library of Video on Demand (VoD) movies available for U‐verse
Customers.
13. Q: Can a customer access the U‐verse VoD content from the Xbox 360?
A: Yes. While in the U‐verse application of the Xbox 360, the customer has the same access to U‐verse VoD as a Uverse
HD Receiver. Only while running the U‐verse application if the Xbox 360 is in Xbox 360 mode U‐verse VoD can
not be viewed.
Question 10 and 11 are similar and basically this says that in Xbox 360 mode the Xbox 360 can only access Xbox 360
content and act like an Xbox 360, in the U‐verse TV mode the Xbox 360 can act only like a U‐verse receiver and access Uverse
content only.
14. Q: If a customer already has an Xbox 360 that they plan to install on Uverse and that Xbox 360 already has a remote
control unit will AT&T still send the Xbox 360 remote control as part of the “kit” for Xbox 360?
A: Yes. AT&T will send the remote no matter what. There are various types of Xbox 360’s in use and some customers
may have the same remote already and some will not. Either way, AT&T will send a remote out and the customer
will have two of them.
ALSO:
4. At this time AT&T has agreed to install ONLY ONE customer’s X‐box per household as a new customer or as an
additional STB upsell.
5. If a customer requests a STB swap on a current live U‐verse account and the service is NOT an upgrade
(changing from an AT&T STB to use their X‐Box as a STB), we will honor these requests. There will be a $55
truck roll and a $99 one time X‐box fee.
6. If a customer wants to swap their X‐Box as a STB to a standard AT&T STB on a current live account, we are
honoring those requests at this time.
7. Xbox customer must establish an Xbox live account in order to use the Xbox as a STB. See X‐box 360 M&P for
steps to assist the customer with Account Set Up.
8. All Xbox item contents are to be left with the customer with the following exception. If the HPNA adapter is
not used for installation, it will not be left with the customer and does not change the overall charge of
$99.
Billing
U‐verse TV on Xbox 360 does carry a one time installation charge of $99 when being installed with U‐verse service. Existing
customers adding Xbox 360 as a STB will receive a one time installation charge of $99 and a truck roll charge of $55."

Well lucky for me I don't live in Canada, I live in South Florida. It makes no difference to me that there are other possibly greedier companies out there OR what their deceitful practices are. The point is many of us are upset because we expected better from ATT. Big business as usual has taken a very exciting new product and smothered it with fees. I'm leaving DirecTV because of such practices and here I am finding another carrot in view attempting to fleece me yet again.
I have my install scheduled this week and I'm contemplating this new offering.. My only concern is that ATT will fleece the early adopters then come to their senses and fix all this nonsense.

If you plan to stay with Uverse for over a year, you should go for the Xbox option. You would be saving yourself $55 over existing customers...

What I find interesting is this is not OFFICIALLY out yet (usual testing before release date), so WHY did ATT allow that official video out there?
Normally we don't see such things until it is placed in the Announcements section and a new feature has been rolled out already to most.
Who knows, maybe MS is getting their cut by putting the XB Remote in that package? If they don't get the subscribers they're expecting, I'll bet something will change, like maybe just a CD for self-install (fee) or it will be downloadable from XB Live. This could eventually be treated like the new UV HSI self-installs (and DSL self-installs).

The HomePNA thing is a joke for us who have wired their houses with Cat5. I have Uverse already and all my receivers are Cat5 runs directly to my 2Wire Uverse Router. So ALL I NEED IS THE SOFTWARE. The media center remote is lame. I already have one of those and I have Harmony Remote anyways so that is not needed.
Someone from AT&T just needs to torrent the software so we can burn it and load it up and then return our receivers.

You missed a step: the XBox needs to be activated in the system, and the old boxes need to be removed from the system.

I'm in the same situation as above. I have three xboxes on the net (who doesn't?), a harmony RF remote, and 2 uverse boxes. I think ATT needs to have a self install method for the software, how hard can it be? I'd pay for the software. even if it is limited to one xbox I could live with that for now. I might even be willing to pay a charge to use my xbox for something like $5/month. But the $154 charge to use it with stuff I don't need isn't worth it at all.

Would you happen to have gotten that from uverseusers from a member called PremtechSupreme? Looks awfully familiar to the memo he posted in a similar thread to this (but on uverseusers of course)

The official launch per the leaked screens on engadget show a date of 11/07/10. I think this was a good move on their part BUT I think they mishandled the media on this one. There are too many sites reporting incorrect information such as costs and requirements.

Like I said over on uverseusers (as a reply to PremtechSupreme), I wouldn't really trust the info from that memo, a lot of it differs to what at&t is advertising, and some of the terminology is incorrect, I got a reply from a Prem Tech on that site saying that most "Uconnects" (the name of those internal memos) are usually full of incorrect information

Until they offer an option that doesn't require the full kit, I will have to say no.
Not worth the cost to me.

"You must have U-verse TV and U-verse High Speed Internet"
AT&T HSI, second deal breaker. I was excited, but I won't lose any sleep over this.

Not that surprised about this; you can't even use the web remote without AT&T HSI.

I have three xbox 360s from my days of using media center and the xboxs as extenders. If you can buy one kit and install it on the other two, I'd strongly consider it. However, that doesn't look likely based on what I've read. Hopefully some early adopters will figure this out for us.

Well, so far, only one Xbox can be connected to U-verse for IPTV, I think since the Xbox has to be provisioned on at&t's servers in order to work, if you tried connecting another Xbox for IPTV, it wouldn't work

The way I read it existing customers have to call and order the kit. That suggests to me that the kit is mailed to the customer. Once you get the kit, you can then install the application on all three of your Xboxes and then call in the Tech to complete the process, by provisioning the Xboxes for U-verse TV.
That should work....Right?
Also, I would think that if at&t intended to permanently limit one Xbox per account, it would be listed in the disclaimer at the bottom of the page. But like you said, hopefully the early adopters will fill in the blanks on this...

No. As I understand it, the "kit" will be delivered by at tech when he arrives onsite. The kit is not mailed to the customer.

You are probably right, but to me the way it is worded on that page suggests that it is mailed...
