A Veteran – whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve – is someone who, at a one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘The United States of America’, for an amount of “up to and including his/her life.” ...Author Unknown

There's no point asking about the modes he's currently in to coz he can control his tv and receiver
I guess what he's askin is why he needs to go near the tv and the stb before he can control it..![]()

Maybe it needs batteries.
Said he replaced the batteries already.
Maybe the batteries were no good?

I've had remote issues with one of my boxes. Sometimes would pick up the remote or it picked up the wrong button, but everything else worked fine. I guess that there is some sort of interference in my living room, even though the power saving feature is turned off on my tv, but I just put a strip of blue masking tape over the ir sensor on the box and it works great now.

I had much of the same problem since I got my new HD TV. Reading other messages here, it seems the DVR & STB's seem to have a problem with RF interference from LCD TV's where it can't read the signals from the remote very well. I even read where someone came up with a workaround using layers upon layers of "Press & Seal" on the DVR to help shield it from the RF the TV throws off. Here is how I solved the problem. Since my TV sits on a stand, not mounted on a wall and the stand has a glass front, I placed my STB inside the stand (I had to clear out a shelf that was filled with DVD's and other stuff that got "temporarily" placed there). The stand with the glass door closed shielded enough of the TV's RF to allow my remote to work much much better. In fact, I hardly have any more problems with the remote (unless the dog is standing in front of the stand blocking the STB).
