I know they are recallable channels on some systems.
On a related topic, is there an easy way to set temporary favorites? With my old DirecTV system I could scroll through the channel guide and load up to five channels into a temporary favorites guide that I could quickly rotate through. Those five stations would remain until manually removed (even if I surfed other channels in the main guide) or until over written by another channel.
I find that even with many more channels now than I had with DirecTV I actually watch much less because it is a pain to scroll thorough the guide and find things to watch, and with the "last" button you goggle between two channels anyway.

My solution is to build a favorites guide, While watching a channel, hit the enter button. Select add to favorites. Do this to add any channel.
To view the favorites guide - hit the enter button - down arrow to view guide - OK button
Scroll your channels in the abbreviated guide.
Hopefully, we will someday see this modified to include the direct channel scan & a more efficient display of the favorites guide.

I asked the same question when I signed up for the service a couple years ago. Apparently the buttons you mention do nothing at all, but there was nothing about those buttons in the documentation I received with the remote.
I think the U-verse remote is extremely un-user-friendly. For users whose eyesight isn't 20/20 or who aren't tech savvy (especially the elderly), the small buttons are hard to see and unwieldy to operate. It takes forever to scroll through the channels and even longer to block out the channels (way too many!) that you don't want to negotiate every time you search for something worthwhile to watch. Especially in light of all the new unwanted shopping channels, foreign language channels that I don't understand, and multi-view channels (most of which are blank with my service anyway) that keep popping up and making the channel selection process even more laborious.
The temporary favorites option is a brilliant idea and the U-verse people should make it happen.

Add color to the remote!! Nothing more nothing less.

Setting up a limited favorites guide is a (very) slight improvement, but I'm thinking more and more each day that going with U-verse TV was a major mistake. Even with all the added movie channels I find I watch MUCH less variety of programming because it is so incredibly inconvenient to rotate between more than two channels.
The ease of the remote and favorites features of DirecTV are what kept me from switching after trying friends AppleTV and TiVo (on DirecTV, at a relative's who basically designed most of what's inside that DVR's box).
The other thread talking about the remote being poorly laid out is dead on - it's a pain to access the favorites guide and way too easy to entire a random channel on the keypad.
If DirecTV made an offer to cover the cost canceling U-verse I'd have it shut off by Monday. Ah well, gives me a reason to look forward to the contract ending. (On the plus side, I now know where fiber optic starts in this neighborhood - if I buy a house six block over where I use to rent they have to switch me back to telco and DSL, and no U-verse TV!!)

Why did you switch from DirecTV to U-verse?

I moved 6 blocks and when I tried to switch over my DSL/phone AT&T said this area was only fiber optic - no DSL, only U-verse Internet and phone. They pitched a bundle with TV too and I took it over the bundle DirecTV countered with. My mistake.
