I paid AT&T to install a CAT5 Homerun to my RG for U-Verse Internet only. My remodel starting tomorrow required me to locate the RG in a different room. I bought another CAT5 Etherent cable and a F-F coupler thinking I would have them pull the Homerun back out of the wall and use the coupler and the new CAT5 cable to bring down the new wall.
I was in the process of disconnecting my equipment and just noticed that the Homerun CAT5 cable has a RJ11 phone connecter attached and only a Green and White cable are in the connector and the rest of the CAT5 wires are cutoff prior to the connector. This is then pulgged into the telephone input of the RG. I had assumed this had an RJ45 connector.
My questions is, how do I extend this homerun CAT5 which is connected to a RJ11 connector ? Urgent advice is needed as the remodel starts tomorrow.
Thanks in advance.

Your RG is using a single twisted pair. you can use a regular phone cord and coupler to move it temporaraly. You may experience some degrade of signal due to the pairs not twisted but not much.

Buy a piece of CAT5 or CAT3 that is long enough to make the run without splices. You definately do not want to wall up a splice in the line.

Thanks for your help. If I get an RJ11 coupler and phone wire to route to the new RG location, why would this solution be temporary ? If so, what would you recommend as a permanent solution ? I would rather not go through the trouble / expense of a new CAT5 home run.

You most likely won't be making the connection in the Nid (company side may be locked out) as that's where the line starts. As CJ posted, you don't want a splice anywhere, 1 direct line is important from the Nid to the RG. ![]()

If this is a temp move until remodel, what i posted will be fine for now. If it is perm move then run a new cat5 to the nid.
