So I've Got A 3801HGV and I would like to setup my ASUS RTN16 running Tomato as the primary router for the house.
I've read many guides and can't seem to get the 3801HGV to give a DHCP address to my RTN16.
My Setup:
3801HGV[LAN2] -> RTN16[WAN] (straight through cable)
3801HGV 192.168.1.X -> RTN16 192.168.2.X

First of all, with UVerse RG, one cannot have any other router to be the primary router, period. If you have browsed through this forum, you would have realized that.
However, you can set up your private router as "a router behind a router" in a somewhat "bridge mode". Joe has instructions for that here.
I don't know about how Asus router behaves, but upon finishing Joe's instructions, Netgear (and Linksys) routers will immediately create a subnet 10.0.0.x. Now, you have successfully created a router-behind-a-router. Internet will work fine. You just can't have 192.168.1.x which is highly guarded by the RG.
On the other hand, you can make use of your router's radio if you are trying to take advantage of the 5-GHz N-mode the way I do. Then, you need to disable DHCP in your Asus router to turn it into a mere Access Point (aka radio). Use a network cable to connect Asus's LAN port to RG's LAN port. All your computer will then get 192.168.1.x IP.
By the way, now adays, all the network devices have grown smart and there is no need for special cross-over network wire. There is only one kind which is straight.
I am just throwing in my 2-cents because I am watching TV while I should have gone to bed. I am sure, senior forum contributors will help you further.

Log in to your RG, choose the "Settings" tab, click the "Lan" subtab, then click the "DHCP" subtab below that. While there is an option to configure manually if you want it on a specific range; I chose the second 172.16.0.0/255.255.0.0 radio button. NOTE! This will change your RG's default IP address to 172.16.0.1. This will however allow your personal router to use the 192.168.x.x range. On a side note, life would be soooo much easier if they'd just give us a "Use as modem only" button.
With that said, with the "DMZplus" mode activated in the RG for your router, and the RG's ip range moved out of the way its as good as it's going to get. Hope this helps.
