I have U-Verse. It was finally installed last fall after two AT&T techs spent a combined total of 14 hours doing the install. That should have been my signal to tear it all out then.
Wireless connectivity is a chronic problem. Particularly with Apple products, Xbox360, or Blackberry devices. The wireless signal is strong in all parts of the house but the 2Wire modem will not allow access to the internet despite all devices being "connected". Unplugging he modem works for about 24-48 hours until this all happens again.
The connectivity problem occurs whether you are two feet or two floors away from the 2Wire box.
AT&T Tech support has provided such great answers as "call Blackberry" or "call Microsoft" Really?
It sounds like a DHCP Lease expiration problem but no one at tech support knows how to do anything except tell me to unplug the box.
I've had it with U-Verse. Has anyone on this forum solved this problem?

Thanks Chris. I did that about two weeks ago after mentioning my u-verse challenges with my CIO. It worked for him. That seemed to help for a few weeks but the problem is back again in full force.
Any other suggestions? I doubt another gateway from u-verse will fix it. Would connecting another brand wireless access point and disabling wireless off the U-verse gateway? I'm sure AT&T will reimburse me for that!

Unluckily many users resort to a router behind the RG to solve those problems, others use the same router they used w/a previous provider and just continued using it.
Here's a ComputerJoe post on how to add a router:

You might also want to give it some time. There's an update rolling through the country that will update the RG to correct several of the wireless issues. Its being released slowly around the country and should be completed by April 1. I haven't seen a schedule so it's unknown as to when it will hit each market but it is supposed to clear up this issue and a couple others.

Does anyone know if I can do this myself without waiting? I had to restart the RG three times yesterday. AT&T are you out there?

Update 2/23/12:
I did a factory reset on Monday at the direction of technical support. That helped for about 48 hours but today we're back to no wi-fi on non-windows devices.
AT&T says the next step is another RG, which requires a technician appointment. I really doubt that will fix the problem.
AT&T: I'd like you to pay for one month of u-verse which will cover the cost of me purchasing an Apple Airport for use behind your defective wi-fi feature I'd also like data overage charges reversed on the two AT&T Wireless devices that are going over this month since they can't reliably connect inside the house, 5 feet away from the RG.

The issue is NOT a "bad router", and the issue is not with Microsoft, HP, Apple, Dell, or RIM.
Anyone from AT&T have a solution?
