I have discovered the reason for the initial one year discount. U-Verse DSL service is horrible and I cannot recommend it to anyone. The issue is with the Motorola Gateway which quite frequently loads pages only partially and won't load all photos in photo intensive sites. I have to frequently clear my browser cache and refresh. That is very unacceptable.
The line service reps are doing the best they can, but the MANAGEMENT of AT&T has created a system that is stupid and unworkable. This is another example of people who probably don't use the product making decisions. If they used the product, they'd know what the problem is...
