I currently have a receiver in my bedroom (second/ non-DVR receiver). There is a direct run back to my RG. I just got a new TV that has web apps. I would like to put another router/switch on that cat5 coming from the RG and use it to connect both the receiver and TV.
Is this possible? What problems will I find? I can dumb down the additional router (no dhcp server, etc) so it should be all but invisible to the RG. Or I can smarten it up with Qos so that most of the bandwidth goes to receiver.
Anyone currently doing this? suggestions?

No, there is no problem adding a switch (or even a concentrator (what most people mistakenly call a hub)) to one of the switched ports on the back of the gateway. That is actually a common and valid way to expand the reach of a network. As a perfect example, I have three switches on my home network (two Gigabit and one Fast Ethernet) to provide connectivity to all my equipment. For simple purposes, think of the switch as being a power strip: when you have a need of more outlets than the pair at the wall, plug in a power strip to turn one outlet into six. ;-) The only limitation with any copper Ethernet cable (Cat 5, 5e, or 6), though, is the distance cannot exceed 100 meters (328 feet) between the two devices. In a typical home, though, that should not be a problem.
