uverse flooding my wireless access point and making it useless

hope someone can help.

my setup looks like this

phone company>2wire RG > coax/hpna > settop box > ethernet > wireless access point (2nd)

i know my 2wire RG can be an access point and it is, but for 1/2 my house.  the other is served off the 2nd access point.  all works fine, and i am able to share the DHCP off the RG and connect via the hpna coax network.  the problem is when i start watching tv, the 2nd access point goes crazy.

I did a wireshark and see traffic like this

i understand it's multicast traffic and it's probably from the tv signal over coax.  why would it flood my egress ethernet port that feeds my router?  why is my router choking at all the traffic.    when i mean choking, all wireless capabilitues come to a halt, and nothing works.  as soon as i turn off my settop box, traffic resumes like normal.  i am using a wrt160n.

Multicast traffic is treated as broadcast traffic by most networking gear. The multicast traffic will flood anything connected to the set-top box's Ethernet port.

Wireless access points treat the traffic just like broadcast traffic also, and attempt to forward all of it to the wireless interface. This ends up choking the access point.

To prevent this, don't plug the access point into the STB's Ethernet port. Run an Ethernet wire from the access point back to the RG, and plug it in there. The RG has some intelligence that only directs the multicast traffic to those ports that need it, so multicast traffic won't reach your wireless access point when connected this way.

so other than running a separate link from my RG, is there any way i can filter the broadcast/multicast traffic?  i was sold on the fact that i could use the hpna coax feed to bridge my network together.

A customized Linux machine with 2 network interfaces can probably be set up to filter multicast, but that's about it. You would have to be really familiar with Linux to get it configured for this.

You could use powerline Ethernet adapters instead of running a new cable. Use one adapter at the RG and another at the wireless access point.

not solving my multicast connection, but will be able to reuse the coax run in my house.  i do like your powerline adaptor idea as well.
