Okay, since you have uvoice and your RG is already in the room where the fax is, buy one of these http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?produc
That should get you dial tone to the fax.
Post back with any questions.

I have a similar situation. Purchased an HP J3680 All-In-One MFD. I can fax out with no problem however, when I test on receiving a fax. The sending device reports an error message of phone busy or recorder. I have two phone lines via Uverse with separate numbers. I have turned off the answering service associated with the line I have attached to the HP device which is the only device on that line. The lines are located in a different room than the ATT Modem/Gateway device. I have tried the splitter mentioed earler in this thread but it did not resolve the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Called customer service but they are not available on weekends so I will call them tomorrow.
Thanks.

I had the same problem, I coudn't figure out how to set up my computer to do faxing either. I finally just gave up and found a cheap internet fax service and bypassed the issue on my end altogether. Perhaps that wasn't the right approach though -perhaps I should have stuck to my guns and tried to find the solution.

I got a new HP 8500 and I love it. The only problem, I can't figure out how to get the fax to work. Nothing in the HP documentation describes what to do with a U-verse type of system, and nothing in U-verse Help (or the Support chat function) has been helpful enough. I am not a highly sophisticated user, but I'm not clueless, either. I can use a USB or ethernet connection. I have wireless capability but have never used it. My computer and printer are in the same room as my residential gateway. Can someone help, so I can avoid paying some of my ever-shrinking retired income for something that is probably a simple solution? Thanks.

I have an HP 6110xi Multifunction copier/fax/scanner and am using Uverse voice. I have the fax machine working for sending and receiving (had to reduce baud rate to 9600 on the HP). Only issue I have now is when I receive a voice call, the caller gets the fax line noise. I have the fax to answer on 3 rings and Uverse answers on 4. Isn't there a way to have the fax answer ONLY if a fax call is incoming? If I set the fax line to answer in 5 rings, the fax will never come thru as Uverse vmail will pickup the call in 4 rings...

I recently got Uverse triple package installed and was able to set up my HP Photosmart C7280 All In one Fax, did the HP fax test on the machine and all test shows passed. Now I am unable to send a fax.
Tried calling ATT Uverse tech support and was told by one tech all i needed to do was to connect a phone cable from fax to router via the aux line port on router. That didn't work! Called back ATT tech support and the other rep said that my machine is not compatible with Uverse - this machine is not even 2yrs old!!!!! And it as working ok with ATT DSL line up to the date of install.
I only use my fax to send as I have an efax # to recd. I have searched on HP support website + documentation I recd when I purchased the machine and so far nothing showing what I am doing wrong or not doing at all.
This is so upsetting and am thinking of going back to DSL because of this. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have a similar situation - I plugged a phone line into an empty outlet and hooked it to the HP8500 - it works fine for sending. However, when I try to receive a fax, the call goes to the answering machine and the HP 8500 shuts off. Any suggestions for how to keep the answering machine and still receive the fax?
Thanks
