Internet problems

I have had the at&t netgear internet on my windows xp since december 8th. I told the people who came in and installed our cable and internet that I often end up getting viruses on my computer with or without virus protection and end up having to wipe my computer alot. I asked them to show me how to set the internet up on my computer incase I had to wipe it again. My computer was running fine until about halfway through february maybe March and I tried to get on the computer. It wouldn't let me start my computer up so I had to wipe it. Well since I have wiped it I have been trying SO hard to get the internet up on my computer again. Everything I have tried has not worked. It recognizes that the internet is there but it just wont let me install the software for the internet and when I keep getting to a certain point and think its going to work it keeps asking me if I want to remove the netgear software if I press no it does nothing. Nothing is installed I still have no access to the internet if I click yes well it erases the software so either way Im loosing the battle with the internet here and I was wondering if there was something you could tell me to try and figure out how to fix it because I would love to be able to use the internet again and right now I just CAN NOT get on it at all other than on my mothers computer. I'm a bit confused.  There is no software that needs to be installed on your computer to allow you to access the internet. What is this Netgear software that you are referring to?  

Also, which U-verse modem do you have?  Do you have U-verse TV and U-verse internet?
