Moved to Uverse 6 meg: Is the ATT Gateway required?

I've been chugging away for years on the 3 meg internet as my home backup internet with my Netgear N300 ADSL2+ and wifi router. Recently, I was about to cancel due to the price increase, and I was offered 6 meg Uverse if I'd not cancel my service.

The Uverse service arrived with a nice $100 charge for a gateway, $49 for activation, and I thought: No big deal! I don't need their gateway!

Or do I?

I can't seem to get the N300 to work with the 6 meg Uverse service. The modem stays in the "negotiating" stage. The wizard that would normally detect the type of DSL you have simply has no connection.

Am I missing something here? I'm an IT guy so I'm not non-technical, though Googling the matter lands me with very little useful info.

Thanks for any insight. I'm not sure if $149 is worth keeping the service when I have 30 meg cable for $40 a month and this was just my backup. For $24 a month I was willing to keep it around but I'm not sure if it makes sense if I'm required to buy & use their gateway.

Yes, you need to use the gateway provided by U-verse.

Thanks for the quick answer. Do you know if AT&T offers any more advanced gateways? I need zero ethernet ports but I do need guest internet and DMZ capabilities to use with my home IP based video monitoring system. Thanks!
