Ok I have been driving myself crazy waiting for my install date. I live in an apartment that was built in the mid 1980's and not a single thing has been changed since they built the place. I currently have all 3 bundled services from comcast and cant wait to change over. I have been doing my research while I eagerly wait. From my reading it seems that the options for installation from best to worst is Cat5, Coax, then phone line at least from the box to my apt. My question is what do I need to be aware of when the tech gets in my place. I have old phone lines and old coax that has probably never been touched in years and no chance of using cat5 or running new cable through the Apt. My research has lead me to believe that quality of cable used can make a difference. I do not even know if the phone lines in my place work since I have used comcast for everything. Since my HD did look good with comcast I am assuming using the coax will work but it still has me worried.
I only have one tv (46" 1080p lcd) and am getting the U200 with HD, elite internet (6 down, 1 up i believe), and u-voice. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. I have been able to find and read about situations similar to mine but nothing like mine. It has either been old house but with the option to add new cables or new condo/apt with cat5 and coax but cant move the cables.

has anyone here ever pulled old cat 3 phone line out and pulled new cat5e thru at the same time (new hooked to old)?...
It has been done but not likely to work in an apartment. It may not have been wired by the phone company. The wires would take a tortured path from the jack to the outside connection. Wires did not pull out easily when they just went through a hole in the floor to a crawl space with drive rings. With new connections on the coax you should be ok. They have even used the cat3 if it is in good shape.

I was in a similar situation as you wit a 25-30year old apt, old wiring, and no way to run new due to physical location of my apt.I do have the good fortune of being about 750' from the VRAD here though. Everyone's line in my building comes in via the same point. It is a box on the end of the building. From there, cabling is run in a crawl space under the building and up and into the walls and various apts. It turns out that the cabling run from the end of the building and throughout the walls of the apartments is Quad...which is not good at all for U-verse. However, the phone line was the best method for getting the service into our apartments here. The guy who did my inside install asked e if I currently used any of my other phone jacks. I do not, since I have a handset cordless phone that all work off of the same base. So, he routed everything to one port and it has been great since it first came on. In fact, over old quad cable, I'm getting a max sync rate of 63896 kbs.
Basically, what I'm saying is to not worry about it too much. I did the same thing. Turned out to not be that big of a deal. It can be done as long as they want to do it.Think about it this way: If it's possible to get it working via any means in an apartment, they will want to do it. That is a large group of potential customers that they would be ignoring otherwise. In fact, here in the Hoover, AL area, you could tell that they purposely turned up VRADS near groupings of apartment communities first. Most bang for AT&T's buck there.

Well just to give an update today (1/3/09) was my install day and the install tech was fantastic. Explained everything in detail. Showed me things that i needed to know and did not bother me with stuff I already knew. My Apt ended up being just fine and things are working great. He kept saying that everywhere he tried he was getting 43% (which he says is good) from outside to inside, inside box to my apt, etc, etc. Thanks for the replys. They really helped calm my nerves and I had my finger on the phone just waiting to have a reason to cancel.
Thanks Again

Hi Everyone,
I had U-verse installed on Friday as planned. It went great and only took about 2 hours. He did have to put the RG upstairs because the phone wiring up there was newer then downstairs and worked better. But so far, so good. Very Happy With It. And my living room PC is having to run wireless, but it's still faster then my previous DSL service was
