I read the posts here, which are somewhat helpful, but I would like to replace the 2Wire RG altogether with a modem that has a better processor/memory; I am concerned that it is bottlenecking my system. In addition, it does not handle multiple wireless devices well; it was constantly dropping my devices, which I had to restart or renew the DHCP lease.
I currently have an Asus RT-N16 as my router (running TomatoUSB), chained to the 2Wire RG. I have the router set up as a DMZ within the 2Wire settings. Everything works fine, but I'm a geek, and I want my speeds as tweaked as I can get them. I have Uverse 12Mb down, 1.5Mb up. There are 2 cat3 cables coming into the RG, one into the "Phone Line" (green) port, and another into the "Phone 1&2" port.
Your help is much appreciated.

Using your Tomato router as the DMZ device is the best you can do. I do the same thing at my house, my router behind the 2Wire is a Cisco 2811.
