i self installed my uverse internet and it works fine. but even though i have my filters hooked up, my landline phone doesn't work. i can't get a dial tone. i did get a dial tone when it was first hooked up but once the internet started working, the phone won't. it's not totally disconnected because when i call the number from my cell, it just rings. it doesn't indicated it's a nonworking number.

Did you select a self-install or a technician install option? Did you get U-Veres Voice service, or keep your POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) service? If you signed-up for U-Verse Voice service, does your phone work when it is plugged directly into the phone port on your residential gateway?
If you had a technician install, call support (from your cell phone of using a VOIP service like Skype). Let them know that your voice service has stopped working when your internet started. If you kept your POTS line, and went with a self-install option, then you must do some special wiring within your NID (box outside your house) in order for the POTS line to be connected. If you signed-up for U-Verse Voice, it is possible that you had a number porting issue, and your port is not finialized yet. If this is the case, you should call the support number and talk with them about your issues.
When I sigend-up for U-Verse voice+Internet, I had problems with AT&T Telephone service not wanting to port my number to AT&T U-Verse. It took me several hone calls to track down the reason and to resolve it. I went about 8-9 days with the ability to make outgoing calls using U-Verse Voice, but not being able to receive calls.

If you have an internet only account and a telco landline, you most likely need to call telco. Although you had a self install, a technician came out to make changes on the outside of the house. If his work order didn't mention that you had telco existing, he may have accidentally disconnected it.
The problem is, because Uverse techs are not telco techs, you will need a telco tech to come out and repair it. If you get to telco repair, and let them know you have no dial tone, they will set up a tech dispatch, and there is usually no charge.

jj, did you receive the filters with your self install kit?
Assuming you are retaining the plain old telephone that you had before and did not agree to conversion to Uverse telephone service, then you should have received several filters. Lots of ways to install them, easiest is you plug the one with two females into your wall. You plug your modem in the green female, and your phone into the other female.
If you did not receive filters with your self install kit, they either forgot, or you signed up for digital UVERSE voice.
I believe in that case you need to remove the cover over the voice outlet on your modem and plug your phone into that.
