What do you think about it? I like it and already record most of my TV now just to edit out all commercials. I think there are way too many ads, on TV, Radio, and Intertnet now anyway.

I HATE COMMERCIALS!!
Why can't the Networks figure out we're not in the last century?
Why do they think people PAY to get channels that have NO commercials!
Why do people leave the room to do something else when a commercial comes on?
Why do people record programs so they can FF through commercials?
Wake up!!
It's out of control...we were just taking about DVDs today and how they force commercials (movie previews) on you. YouTube has become annoying as it's full of popup ads. I propose a heavy tax on all ads, no matter where they appear! And no deductions for them as a business expense.

Yup, commercials are the appendix of broadcasting. A useless hunk of tissue hanging around doing nothing, until it decides to poison you. They're from a time when broadcasters had no revenue stream from the viewer so something had to pay for the programming. Considering probably 80-90% of viewers now pay for all they watch through services from cable providers or subscriptions to online content the only adds they should have is for other programs. Basically the broadcasters are now double dipping and getting paid on both ends As most commercials are added at the last/local point of braodcast it should be fairly easy to just not put them in. The only problem with that is it what do you do with 15 - 20 minutes each hour after the real show ends.
The ones that really torques my testes are the 5 minute long drug commercials or that ridiculous Dragon commercial because quite often they'll run one of those and then pile a standard block of commercials on top of that.![]()
What kills me is they banned commercials for cigarettes and then turned around and allowed drug companies to advertise. I've read studies that directly correlates the rise of drug commercials with the rise of dependencies on pharmacueticals for everyday "survival" including the egregious doping of our children. I saw a show on the DOC channel the other night about our American Ritalin epidemic and the links between the pharmas and the education system and how most referrals for treatment are initiated by the education system so as to make the job of the teacher easier. When you cram 35-40 kids in a room, your going to have some docile kids and some excitable kids. Well you can't have to much creativity or nonconformist with a flat educational plan, so let's drug them into submission.

Ads are the networks primary way of making money. If we had to pay to watch network tv the ads would go away.

It would be free just like going to the movies. LOL
I don't even notice the ads and when I do most of the time it is because it has annoyed me so much I would not buy the product. On the computer using Firefox and NoScript I seldom see a moving ad or pop up.

Oh boy here we go........
Fox, NBC, and CBS are incredibly miffed at Dish Network for providing a digital video recorder with an "Auto Hop" commercial-skipping feature (Fox already refused to show ads for it), and now they're attempting to convince a court that skipping commercials while watching a recorded show is illegal.

BeeBee, think it was already decided in the famous Supreme Court Betamax case, timeshifting and bypassing commercials is legal. There was no limitation as to the commercials, so think this new complaint has no merit. ![]()

It's similar to how if you make a copy of an audio CD that you own in the privacy of your own home for your own use, that falls within the "fair use" doctrine. But if you duplicate the same CD on a mass scale for other people, then you're violating copyright law.
I have no doubt this one will eventually end up in the Supreme Court, and since that court's current make-up is very pro-corporation, I wouldn't be surprised if Dish loses.

I'm not sure how this thread even stuck around as the OP is almost certainly a Dish spammer.
It will be interesting to see how this and the Brooklyn lawsuits go. Too bad that Dish probably has this technology patented / locked down as the U-Verse DVR is fairly feature poor (other than THDVR which is now passe).

Legal or illegal it boils down too you get what you pay for. GM pulls its ads from Facebook before the IPO because they could not see that it was generating any more car sales. Unless they go to a HBO model if the advertisers decide few people are seeing the ads and they quit buying them then that one TV show you like will disappear.

As an exrtra, the stations already add their adds for upcoming shows, etc. to the screen while your watching a show. Usually in the bottom right quadrant. No way to get rid of those. Hope they don't start adds for prescription drugs or anything else!!

The link below is to an interesting article discussing some of the ramifications for Dish and the TV industry as a whole that could result from the wholesale use of the ad skipping feature.

I noticed that the networks are disabling the ff and rew functions on their vod offerings. Now we are forced to watch the commercials when watching tv programs on demand.

I've seen actual ads on those little quadrant areas on FS Detroit Tigers baseball. One has DMC docs and their speciality (they're waving in a video image of themselves too) and there have been others. Sometimes they pop an ad out from the scores box in the upper left too.
Pretty sure I've seen some on Nascar on Fox races too. Seems to be a commonality here in Fox. ![]()

Yah, those things really @#%$* me off, It's getting to the point where they cover the bottom third of the screen now.
Greedy buttheads already control what we watch, now they want control over how we watch it.
I don't think the networks have a leg to stand on. The advertising industry would be the ones to bring this suit.

I saw an ad on TV last night and they mentioned the device by name, but said NOTHING about skipping commercials. This is different from what I saw in the past where they stated plainly it skips all commercials. Interesting.

If I'm not mistaken, it's supposed to be a paid-for option, but they are offering it free (probably for a 3 month period) as a promotion.

I found out a little more about how the Hopper works that might give Dish a way out of this.
Apparently, the auto-hop feature won't work unless you're watching the program after the day that it has aired. For example, if you record Big Bang Theory at 7:00PM Thursday night, you can watch it later that evening, but you will have to manually skip the commercials. Only after 1:00 AM ET will the auto-hop feature work. Furthermore, the auto-hop feature is constrained only to the "Primetime Anytime" recordings from the 4 networks.
Of course, Dish doesn't advertise this because they want to sell units and this is a negative point. But I think it's also contributed to the fear of the unit by the broadcasters and content providers -- they think that no one will watch any ads anymore. The truth is that 82% of cable shows and 90% of network shows are watched the same day as they're aired, even in homes with DVRs. Thus, the conclusion is that for the network shows, only 10% of the people who watch the show will use the auto-hop feature.

I'm for anything that gets rid of commercials! Wish them luck to pave the way for other providers.
Thanks for the research, SJ. ![]()

Sports events and local news are about the only thing that I make any effort to watch the same day they are broadcast. My wife would add the finale episodes of "reality" shows.
We sometimes record the entire season of a show, then watch the episodes over a week or two. Waiting until the next day is no issue. But 8 days may be too limiting for us. They say that this doesn't consume any of your DVR space? Does that mean it's stored in their network and sent on-demand, or it's in a reserved portion of the DVR?

Your DVR space for your own recordings from any channel is separate and managed by you.

Looks like an actual improvement to me. Won't ever go back to a satellite provider, but the Hopper sounds pretty cool.

Agreed. Hopefully AT&T will further develop its DVR as it seems kind of "basic," nowadays.

Yeah, would also need to up the capacity of the hard drive to over 1TB possibly 2TB as cheap as they are now I don't see why they can't.

Compared to 10 or 15 years ago drives are cheap, but most prices are atleast double what it was a 12-18 months ago because of the Tiawan flooding and are just recently starting to recede.
I remember paying almost 450 dollars for a 20 megabyte harddrive for my 8088 and was absolutely giddy with all the room on that drive.

I wouldn't say double, but yes they did go up in price, however you can get a 1TB internal drive for less than $100. Buying in bulk like these manufacturers do I'm sure it's much, much less than that.
