Since prices for food and other things go up following the gas prices, it would be nice if they came back down with the gas prices.

Indeed! Where I work, the overflow parking is just about 1/2 mile from the entrance. Some industrious guy and a mini-bus have started an independent shuttle. He announced that his weekly fares are going up by $1. He said "as soon as the gas prices fall, i will reduce the prices back down ... not." Smart alleck.

What's really interesting is how the U.S. oil prices are not dictated by foreign countries when prices are low. But let somebody sneeze that their production will drop and U.S. gas prices go up. Whats up with that?

It is all demand supply has drop out of the equation. Last summer they had oil tankers sitting off shore because the price was not high enough and the price barely moved down. The prices stared to shoot up because of Libya and that oil would not even arrive here for three weeks. The price is what the market will bare. With these prices there has to be some reduction in demand.

Agree SKP, there's no economic reasoning when it comes to supply and demand setting gas prices.
I remember some years ago staying with a friend of ours in San Francisco. Oil/gas was plentiful and she showed us these huge tanker ships full of oil. They were sitting right off shore in the bay with off-land docking stations since they ran too deep to enter shallow water. And the piping lead right to huge holding tanks with a refinery right there producing gas. I was told there was even gas pipes leading to some close gas stations.
Realize CA has some stringent regs on their gas additives/mixtures, and the taxes are real high, but couldn't understand why the prices in that area of SF had the highest prices in the nation with no overland shipping costs. Who knows and I've probably mentioned this before.

The traders and investors (speculators) are controlling the market and this is affecting our prices.

Here are somet things to consider when pumping gas. The pumping the gas slower has worked for me. I didn't believe it at first but when I tried it and the amount I paid was lower, I became a believer.
TIPS ON PUMPING GAS
I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are paying up to $3.75 to $4.10 per gallon. My line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon:Same is true in Hawaii !!
Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.
Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and otherpetroleum products plays an important role.
A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.
When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.
One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.
Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

I knew about the sediment, but not sure when the ground would be cold in Houston to try this. A lot of the vapor recovery devices malfunction, so it's not always possible to use the autofill latch; which requires a constant off/on of the pump handle. But if it works for you, then it's worth a try.
I have a better idea, go back to actual *pumps* from the olden days! We'll get a workout, no electricity required (hurricanes/power outages), and you can see if the fuel is clean (think that was their original purpose); it's a win-win! ![]()

Careful what you call an antique SPD. I can remember my pop filling up his car from those old hand pumps.
No one worried about 10ths or 100ths of a gallon. You wanted 5 gallons? You pumped until the gas hit the 5 gallon mark on the glass.....then you stuck the hose in the tank fill pipe and let gravity do the rest. How green can one get?
I filled up today here in town for $3.329. About the cheapest around these parts....at least within reasonable driving distance.

Yeah, why not bring those back? Wait, you'd have to do math in your head, or have an attendant to collect the money first...since people these days run off without paying.
No more pay at the pump.
I remember that Sinclair dino...does that make me a dinosaur?
I see he's chained down the and it's current times with the price of that car wash! Who's the dog inside the red car?

Nope Uni, the Sinclair Dino is not chained down! That is his bling - that he was able to buy due to all of the profits that big oil has been making. Next year he hopes to go on a 2 week cruise!

Now if that was a big gold logging chain it would be worth stealing! Spd, is the one who mentioned the chain and he has a real good eye for pets. I never even noticed that dog in the car! ![]()
Well at least the Dino in the photo I posted had his head. Here's a Dino in Norman, Oklahoma where pranksters/vandals decapitated him by sawing his head off. ![]()

At least the story had a happy ending where his head was recovered, re-attached, and he was given a new paint job to boot. ![]()

Gas Buddy alerts sent an email that prices in Indy could jump to 3.59-3.75 price range. They have high confidence (75%) that it will happen. I use the Gas Buddy Android App, comnbined with my smartphone's GPS to find the closest nearby gas prices.

Can see why this thread's on the "back burner" the way gas prices are going. Paid $3.65/gal today and it's getting awfully painful. ![]()
After gassing up I went to Walmart and they had a bunch of new 2011 bike models sitting out in front of the store. Schwinn has a pretty clever marketing gimmick and has signs on their bikes that says, "Doesn't Use Gas!".
I started thinking about it and for the price of 1 1/2 tanks of gas you can buy a half-decent new bike. But if I'm going to be carrying 100 lbs of groceries, in the front and rear baskets of a bike, I'm going to need some training wheels. ![]()

I paid $3.42 at the last fill-up.
We have bikes, but everything is so spread out here. And you better have a shower facility available at your destination!
Yeah, even with double-baskets over the back wheel (do they still make those?), you won't be hauling much. But we could use one of these. And you could take Charlie along with his own cart? But somebody might steal him while you're in the store. ![]()

Yeah, things are too spread out here too. But if I were to buy a bike maybe one of these adult tricycles would be better for hauling groceries/Charlie. But they sure are pricey! ![]()
I do take Charlie to the store sometimes but will not do it in the heat of the day or if I know there will be no shade at certain times of the day. That heavy black coat is just too hot and always have a big water bowl in the Jeep for him. Plus I leave the windows down a ways but not too far where he can get his whole head out/stuck. I'll park beside Walmart where there's shade from the building later in the day. I don't like doing this thinking he will be stolen since this is an area where it's not in public view. But often people, even thieves, may be scared of a big black dog, that doesn't bark or even move, and just sits there with a stare that can see right through you. ![]()

You already know, I want your dog...lucky for you I'm not in your area.
If approached by a stranger, how would he react? You know, crazy people like me who wouldn't be afraid of him?
I worked with a lady who never learned to ride a bike, and she had one of those adult tricycles.
The weather is nice today, lots of sun, but too much pollen!

I know! LOL. Charlie's reaction is always according to a person's demeanor and he can see that in a person. So if you are friendly he would probably be friendly right back. But this is not true for everybody and I've had people come over here where he just doesn't like them. Male or female, it doesn't matter. I'm also leery of these people if I don't know them well and he doesn't like them. Most thieves are not nice and Charlie's reaction would not be friendly. ![]()

I think the Exxon was $3.60 The Walmart maybe 3.55.
Charlie is just what you need with the tricycle. All you need is a harness for a one dog power ride. Just carry plenty of water.
I saw a funny front tag. I am not tailgating I am drafting.

Spd2: Never get gas at this location. Theres this ONE Shell station at the corner of Richmond and Chimneyrock in the Galleria that is the MOST EXPENSIVE in the entire city, famous for their high price and for no reson. Their Regular as of 4/1/2011 is 4.76/gallon.
Back when the snapshot was taken with Google Map (an old pic), the sign shows 3.21 (so gas around the city back then was maybe around $2.60)
Ahh the good ole days of $2.60/gallon gas!!!

I always buy close to home, unless I'm desperate! There's another Shell at Memorial & Benignus (near Rice Epicurean) that might have the same owner. Outrageous prices and no other stations for miles. But that's also high-priced real estate there, so I guess they can afford it.
And back then, we would consider $2.60 too high.

Yes, same here, gas in the genreral area much reasonable then when going deeper into businiess districts. What i dont get about that one expensive location is its always busy , and theres gas stations all over that area much cheaper just two blocks up on westheimer.
i wonder what gas prices are in Michigan area and Chicago.
