But I guess the need to stimulate the economy (get more tax $).
Electric/hybrid vehicles aren't the answer either as you'll be needing charging stations, and I'll guarantee you those won't be free! Think they have a few in Houston now.
Will take a look at prices this afternoon, doubt they've gone down.
I can see the issue with electric cars, being as you said, you'll be needing a charging station eventually (and they are almost impossible to find), but why would hybrid cars need charging stations? Of course there are plug-in hybrid vehicles that you can charge, but the majority of hybrids charge using the gas engine as a generator, and with Toyota hybrids (and maybe other car companies as well, like Ford) use HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) technology allowing the friction of the brake to create power to charge the battery
Of course a tax increase on gas wouldn't be fun to us hybrid owners either, i'm used to filling up my car for around $20~$25

Prices run anywhere between $3.00 to $3.29 a gallon for reg. unleaded in our part of the bay area. This is as of yesterday, haven't been out today.

Well we're sitting on $2.779 per gallon for regular unleaded here in our little town. For the life of me I cannot understand the pricing structure of gasoline. Why not just charge $2.78 and be done with it.
The higher octane "super" unleaded is the same price around here because the octane is boosted by use of 10% grain alcohol mixed with 90% gasoline....also known as Gasohol. The alcohol tax break makes that possible. But then the car owner takes a 5% hit on his fuel mileage so it still ends up costing him more. Unfortunately we have laws in many states.....Missouri and Kansas included.....which REQUIRE gas stations to stock and sell the Gasohol from at least one pump. Only those stations which carry two or more grades of fuel can offer alcohol free gasoline. At least that is what the station managers tell me.

Gas running $2.95/gal here.
Phil, may have mentioned this before but you can barely find gas which isn't really gasohol (10% ethanol) here in Central Ohio. And it's no wonder because found this statement from the Ohio fuel tax laws: "Dealers are refunded 10 cents per gallon of each qualified fuel (ethanol or methanol) blended with unleaded gasoline."
I have a friend who bought a small Ford Ranger pick-up truck about 10 years ago which could also burn E85 fuel ("85% denatured fuel ethanol and gasoline"). This fuel was much cheaper than gas but you could/can hardly find it anywhere. Don't believe E85 fuel ever became popular like they thought it would. Has a lot less power than regular gas, or 10% ethanol gasohol.
And now they may propose to sell E15 which is 15% ethanol. According to the below link only cars made after 2007 can burn it and more expensive to use/make. Probably won't take off any more than E85 did in my opinion.
http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/14/will-the
Wow, is Kerosene high and they always jack up the price when it gets cold. Paid $3.60/gal + $.28 state tax for a total of $3.88/gal. It cost $27.16 for 7 gals. Have no idea why they can't add the State tax in at the pump but you always have to pay inside where it's added to the total.
I only burn my kero heater in the basement when we reach near single digit temps. Almost have to since wood stove doesn't put any heat down there. Too many water pipes plus work a lot down there. Really wonder if it wouldn't be cheaper to run a power sucking electric heater down there? Bet it wouldn't put out as much heat but it may be cheaper than 1 1/2 gals kero per 24 hours ($5.82). I do let the heater go out but it puts a lot of fuel stink when it goes out.
Kind of reminds me of sitting still on a jet plane and you get a strong whiff of kerosene. Kero is one of the main ingredients in jet fuels. If they raise the price of kero in the winter/cold weather wonder if this isn't adding to the current high costs of air travel, besides being typically high during the holidays?

Every time I see this fuel thread it reminds me when I worked at a local gas station near where I lived. I was 16 in 1966 and gas was 26 cents per gallon. Unbelievable. ![]()

Gas jumped from $2.96 to $3.05 at every station in town in the middle of the day. Even the cheap stations were charging what the big name brand stations were charging.
I have read if gas went above $3.00 there was a good chance any improvement in the economy would stall and maybe even go back into a formal recession.

I knew they were going up, but missed a chance at $2.78 two days ago.
Now $2.85+

Yeah, I've read the same dismal predictions for 2012 where oil will hit $120/barrel. ![]()
Monday almost all stations here raised reg gas prices from $2.99 to $3.19. ![]()
Now wonder if they are going to have their usual Thurs price increase on top of the above huge increase? Wouldn't doubt it just to ream the New Year's weekend travelers and gouge as much as they can before years end. And a great welcome for the new year; not!

I paid $3.14 this morning.
Our work vehicles (for out of town site visits) require E85 when possible. We have an E85 pump at a station about 1 mile from our house.

After the fuel price increases get into full affect, they will be followed by price increases for all of the other necessities of life as
we know it.

Which is part of the reason that the economy has taken so long to recover. Gas prices start going up again, the recession will linger and start heading back towards depression. Do we really need that mess again?

The price for regular unleaded here in our little suburb has gone up to $2.899 per gallon. That was an 11 cents per gallon jump overnight.
In all states, as far as I know, the major source of funds for highway and road construction and maintenance is the tax on the fuel we burn in our vehicles. The cost of this service keeps climbing. But, as Americans shift to more fuel efficient vehicles and....yes...even cars using other energy sources....and we use fewer and fewer gallons of gasoline, the revenue derived from those taxes will continue to shrink. So the state highway departments are caught in a bind between income and outgo. It is a certainty that new revenue sources will have to be found and that will most likely be new taxes. I'll bet the tax breaks on ethanol will be removed before long.
Don't know if I've touched on this before.....but....we have a Missouri State Trooper living across the street from us. He told me that they burn E-85 in their cars. Interestingly....he is averaging 85 fewer miles per tankful than with straight gasoline. His car is a Ford Crown Victoria I think.....police version.....and loaded to the gills with electronic devices.

Yeah, they've already commented about less revenue here from gasoline, and talking about 14 cents per gallon raise!
Most of Houston has had mandatory 10% Ethanol in gasoline for years, and it does cut down on mpg.
So I go as fast as I can on the freeway to get my $s worth. ![]()
I really think politicians need to get decreases in pay and perks so the rest of us can afford to live.

$3.13 in Central Ohio. As soon as the pipeline leak story hit the news the prices went way up. I'm sure they didn't pay higher prices for the gas in those full underground storage tanks. ![]()

Seem to be falling here, Uni, with some prices in the 2.85-3.05 range. I saw 2.94 and 3.05 on my drive this morning.

I'll have to double check the prices Dave. To tell you the truth the price I quoted ($3.13) was 2-3 days ago. Hope they are also dropping here.
Seems like whenever there is a bad news story about oil/gas prices going up (eg. pipeline leak) we fear it will cost us a lot more. And indeed the stations prey on these fears and immediately jack up the prices which we expect. Then the prices level off, but not back down to where they were, when it's found the impact may not be immediate. It's a vicious circle and the stations/oil companies have us just where they want us. ![]()

I checked Gas Buddy around Cols and see that the best prices are way up North, around Westerville / Polaris Road - $2.89. Our lowest prices around here are similar with 2.84 the lowest but that is 25 miles away, in Franklin.

I will have to look for you there.

Ours has jumped up to $2.99 in most places now. So much for econmic recovery. This is one of the big reasons the economy starting tanking a couple of years ago.
