Wishing everyone a happy & great Independence Day!
![]()
Our family went to the San Diego fair yesterday and will be going back tonight to watch the fireworks over the SD Bay. Of course we'll be grillin' out some ribs and other stuff before we go.
The 4th of July has a special meaning to my wife and I since that was our 1st date some 40 years ago. ![]()

Happy Fourth of July!
If you can’t get out to see fireworks, you can enjoy some here!

Looks like San Diego had quite a big mistake last night. Show cancelled after entire display went off at once.

Yeah OUfan and luckily we were watching them at the Del Mar fairgrounds, where the fireworks went off as planned, instead of downtown SD where they all went off at once.

But our watching the fireworks from the beach next to the fairgrounds didn't go off quite as planned either. My daughter has a video camera set up in her living room monitored by her iphone and her 2 Golden Retrievers and 1 American Eskimo dogs were going absolutely nuts from the neighborhood fireworks noise. This was prior to the large fireworks display and she, along with her fiancee, had to leave to take care of the dogs. We stayed at the beach to watch the fireworks with the kids and bummer they missed them.

Not nearly as many neighborhood fireworks as in the past, yay! Local news reported because of the economy, people were spending less on fireworks. I wish they'd make them illegal outside city limits!!!

Most of the cities in our area have outlawed fireworks. I kinda miss the old days when I'd shoot off black cats and bottle rockets all day long.

Our neighborhood was like a wartime battleground. From dusk to well after 1:00 AM it was a constant roar so loud that carrying on a conversation out in our yard was difficult. It looked like all the neighborhoods in our area of town had thrown all their fireworks.....especially the nightworks.....together and then everyone got together for the show. From our front yard we could look anydirection for 360 degrees and see hugh sky displays going off. So I think there must still be a lot of people who like to waste money. Our oldest son came over for the evening with his wife and youngest son and so that the kid could set his fireworks off. They are illegal in their town over on the Kansas side of the state line. Alfie was a wreck by the time the evening was over and now, 4 days later, he is just beginning to bring himself to go outside with me without a struggle. A fellow down the block was nailing some boards together and Alfie was frightened by the sound of the hammer blows and bolted for the door. Judging by past years experiences....it'll take him a couple of weeks or more to get back to something resembling normal. The trauma also throws him off his feeding schedule so I'm struggling with that now.
There is a nightwork that I had not seen before. It's a thin paper balloon-like device with a flaming heat source. They glow in the night sky and float on the breeze at an altitude of several hundred feet. God know where they come down. But here we are in the midst of a drought with lots of bruch, heavy overgrowth of grass, weeds and hay in fields near our neighborhood and these mindless wonders south of us were sending these floating firestarters aloft by the dozen. I have absolutely no idea where they eventually came down. But I sure hope there was no dried out tinder for them to ignite. We did hear sirens a couple of times but have no idea what the reason was.
A Veteran – whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve – is someone who, at a one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘The United States of America’, for an amount of “up to and including his/her life.” ...Author Unknown

Believe the type of lighted device you are describing Phil are called "Sky Lanterns - Lighted Floating Balloons". They're advertised as being fire resistant (forced word filter change) and biodegradable but agree about them being a hazard/setting the drought stricken areas on fire.

There's some large fireworks distributors/stores just S of me outside any city limits. Kind of a farce where all you have to do is show a drivers license and sign a piece of paper stating what city outside of Ohio you are going to set them off in. You can even buy the big mortars/tubes and they send me junk mail every year since they're local.
In living in a rural area it sounds like a war around here a lot of the time. Many kids will come home from school and bang away on their video games. But there's a couple kids near me who like to just shoot guns constantly as soon as they get home. So much for the quiet country outside and Charlie heads for the door since he hates the sound of gunfire as well as fireworks.

I'm just tired of the closeted pyromaniacs. I like how they sit on their side of the street and shoot them at a neighbor's house! Pets should not be terrorized in their own home because someone likes to play with fire. Not to mention the poor dogs and cats (and wildlife) who are outside and no place to hide.
Aren't most of the fireworks NOT made in the USA? They put small plastic flags in every yard at the curb here, and they're made in China! ![]()
Smoke can get very thick around here, but somehow that doesn't qualify as air pollution to the EPA. What a joke! ![]()
