We have had a lot of rain in the last few weeks. The big moss patch under the trees in the front yard is turning green and producing new sprouts. Hope it fills in the sandy holes when the moss produces spores. Could not get grass to grow under the trees so I encourage the moss to grow. If I want green I just add water and in about 1/2 hour I have green.
Unless you go for a golf green type yard grass does not do well here. Too add to the problem Brown patch circles is spreading like crazy and killing what grass people have.

Hi Escapee!!
It's a cool day here and some light rain, on and off, all day...what a difference from just a few days ago. Roasted in Baltimore on the weekend, when I was there. This actually feels nice. ![]()

Finally got some much needed rain yesterday, just under and inch, it was bone dry for almost 3 weeks and drought conditions were starting to develop. The big storms hit about 60 miles south of here with some areas getting 3 - 6 inches of rain and major flooding. Supposed to be in the mid 90's and windy for the first half of the week so the moisture in the ground we got yesterday will evaporate quickly.

Not so lucky here, jfw. Yes there were areas in West Central Indiana (Attica) that received 5-6" of rain and, of course, flooding. Not a drop here. In fact only five one hundredths of an inch (0.05") in Indianapolis for all of June. That stinks. The last rain was on June 4th, two hundredths of an inch. Slight chance Thursday night and less of a chance (slighter than slight?) on Saturday night. At least the temps will moderate down to the mid 80's versus the mid 90's.

Yep, heat is headed your way DC and already hot here (90 now)! Dip in a pool sounds nice! ![]()
Farmers are already suffering here even though we had some rain Sun. Still only makes about 3 days of rain in the past 35. Grounds cracked, corn & soybeans are withering/almost dying, and so much for getting such a great early start. We didn't have hardly any Spring rains and the constant 8-10mph SW winds with this 90+ heat are making the drought conditions even worse. ![]()

Just had a 10' Redbud right next to the house where the leaves just dried and the tree died. Only thing I can figure it's on a hill and the chipmunks tunneled all under it letting the heat/air get to the roots. Other Redbuds only 10' away look great.

Another day in the mid 90's we have had 13 days so far this year with temps at 90 or above, most ever this early, and our hottest months are still to come. Front expected through tonight but the chances of any substantial rain appear low, last year we had more rain than we could handle and this year is abnormally dry, go figure.

There is rain in the Indy area but it appears that 90% of it will stay North and West of us. The only hope is a star shiower. Only two small chances over the next 8 days.
Most of Indiana is now under "Moderate Drought" conditions or worse.

Last night I checked the radar before turning in and there was an impressive line of storms in Iowa headed this way, got up this morning and nada, after crossing the Mississippi River the line fell apart, just picked up a sprinkle and that was it. No drought conditions here yet but it's very dry. Next chance of rain is Saturday night and only 20%.

Another thing to think about as far as drought conditions go, is the lack of snow this past winter which adds a lot of moisture deep in the soils. The previous winter we had tons of snow, as you know jfw as Chicago was buried, along with record rainfall last year. No snow plus no rain is just asking for drought conditions in the North.
My flowers are barely making it through this 90+ degree heat. Impatiens and Big-leaf Begonias sure don't like it. But the heat loving tomatoes are growing like crazy in big posts. I have to water everything about every day but have to watch I don't run my well dry with no rain entering the aquifer.
The trees also appear to be stressed from the heat. The Black Walnut trees are dropping green walnuts prematurely and I have a wet-loving Sycamore tree next to my drive which is about 70' tall. Just happened to park my wife's Jeep Wrangler under this tree a couple days ago in our drive next to the house. A 2"-3" dia tree limb broke/fell from about 50-60' up dropped right on her hood causing a nice big dent. Insurance claim time and luckily it's covered by comprehensive w/no deductible. Maybe I can get them to fix the couple walnut dents in the hood at the same time! LOL.

JFW, we got lucky in the K.C., MO area. The tail of that line of thunderboomers reached down and brought us 1.2" of rain. Wonderful. Our tomato plants responded immediately. BUT.....the heat is not over. We are moving back into the 90's and this coming Sunday's high is forecast to be somewhere between 102 and 105 degrees. Depends on who ya listen to. So, Uni, we share your worries. Ye gods, it's still only June. Unless something changes radically.....July and August are going to be real killers. We can water our flowers and tomato plants. I have a hose attachment for shooting water deep to the tree roots but watering the yard is just too darn expensive in our water district. So we'll have to let the grass go dormant and hope for the best. We take good care of the grass. It gets its fertilizer on time and it has had anti-grub worm treatment. We hire all that stuff done by Scotts. So it should survive semi-drought conditions. But if a drought lasts too long even healthy yards will be hit and we'll have some lawn killed I'm afraid. My wife is getting ripe cherry tomatoes off her plants already. We have greenies on the other, regular size, plants but no ripe ones yet. I screwed up and let my youngest son talk me out of replacing that junk Miracle Grow garden soil that I bought two seasons ago. I was going to dig it all out of the tomato bed and replace with just ordinary top soil. Now, just like I was afraid would happen, about half of our plants don't look good at all. I could just kick myself in the you-know-what for not going ahead with my original plan to replace it. NEXT year......it's GONE. I don't care who objects.....and I'll never buy another Miracle Grow product again. Perhaps....THEN....I can get back to having a healthy tomato patch the way it used to be.
I hope y'all had your A/C units checked and serviced this spring. At least help it out by replacing the filter. I just did.

Indianapolis got something beyond a sprinkle but less than a light rain shower and it was all over in 90 seconds. Really foggy this morning as drier air is coming in at different layers.
Our tomato plants (2) are doing okay with Miracle Grow potting soil but we shall see. My late mother's garden had some good 'mater growing soil.....

Hey, SPD. Maybe y'all could send just a few good rains up our way from Debbie. Not too much ya understand. My tomatoes are crying for some good deep watering from the sky. Tap water helps but that chlorine and fluoride in the city water must have a bad effect on plants.
We hit a high of an even 100 degrees today. There is a cool front moving down from the north but it may not have much effect. Now we can worry about my wife's brother and his wife out in Colorado Springs. Parts of that city and nearby Manitou have been put under voluntary evacuation orders because of the approaching forest fire. Our family members live on the SE end of the Springs so maybe they won't be in danger anytime soon. But he does have their 5th wheel travel trailer parked next to their son's cabin up in the mountains. I'll bet they're worrying about that.

After being in the low 90's yesterday, another "dry" front came through in the evening and dropped the temps about 20 degrees. The next couple days will be pleasant with temps in the mid 70's but another heat wave is on the way for the middle and end of the week, high on Thursday forecast to be 100 with only a slight chance of rain.
Debbie is really soaking Florida and because it's so slow moving, I read some areas could get 10-15 inches of rain with locally higher amounts.
Most of the state has been in drought conditions for quite some time and I'm sure some of the rain was welcome, but not that much!

So much for the rain they forecast last night which never materialized. And none forecast for the rest of the week while we will be near 100 by the end of the week here. That's real hot here and haven't seen any temps hit 100 in a few years.
Just saw on the news where tropical storm Debby is dropping 15-20" of rain on parts of Florida. We sure could use some of that up here but not that much.
Went to Walmart yesterday and overnight they just jacked up the price of the brand of OJ I buy from $3 to $3.50 for 1/2 gal. I wonder if they did this figuring Debby might damage the FL orange crop?? ![]()

We're looking at 100+ temps in DFW for the next week. It hit 104 yesterday. Started a little later than last year, but summer has officially arrived. Good for the wife's job since she does marketing for a plumbing/heating and ac company.

Which officially reminds me why I don't live in Texas anymore. Although it's gonna try and hit 100 here around Chitown Thursday.
Last night we hit 49.5. That's almost 30 degrees cooler than 3 night ago. Definately been on the Mercury Rollercoaster the last week or so around here.

Real cool around here too last night with temps in the low 50's. Hard to believe the high in a couple days will be almost 50 degrees warmer.

Yes it was nice and cool last night Uni, as CJ said got to around 50 away from the city and yesterday was only in the low 70's so the A/C got the day off.
The heat starts tomorrow with low 90's forecast, 100 - 105 on Thursday and low to mid 90's through next Monday with only a slight chance of an isolated storm the next few days. Some of the suburbs have been talking about possibly canceling their fireworks due to the extremely dry conditions so it might be a quite 4th around here.

There was some awesome natural air conditioning, this morning. That is what dewpoints below 40 will do. I believe that a dry front went through overnight. It hit 86 yesterday but was only forecast to hit 79. Oops.
Indianapolis onlly hits 100 every 20 years or so but we may hit it two years in a row. Thursday's high is forecasted at 101 with upper 90's the next 5 or so days and only spotty rain chances. We are 3.5" down for the month, in terms of rain. 21 straight days w/o any measurable precip.
