Looks like another Derecho moving out of Minnesota and into northern Wisconsin right now.

Thanks for the support guys and my son's happy the internet/phone's working again. I'll be lucky if the power is even back on come Friday night when we return.
BTW SKP, don't even know why I'm keeping the freezer/fridge running by generator. My son has already eaten about every piece of meat/steak in the house! LOL.

Yah, the one I was watching last night on the radar looked like a classic progressive derecho with the big bow echo and "bookend" vortices. I couldn't tell whether it got the full distance to aquire the text book definition or not though.

I have a friend who lives in NW Virginia and, interestingly enough, he and his wife purchased and installed a 7.5 KW generator at their home last December. He can't power their home A/C with it but they can run most everything else. I don't know if they have an electric or gas range in their kitchen.
Our motorhome had a 7.5 KW diesel generator in it. We could run everything.....including the two roof-mounted A/C units. So we got along very well with it when necessary. Our 100 lb. food freezer was capable of running off both 120 Volts AC or 12 Volts DC. So for short periods of time it could run off the batteries. Of course when we fired up the big gen. that took care of everything. The refrigerator used either 120 Volts AC or propane so no problem there. AND...we had both OTA and satellite TV reception. That motorhome was definitely the best place to be in a disaster......unless, of course, a tree would fall on it.
High here at home today was 103.5 deg. Probably hotter tomorrow. The forecast for Kansas City is for highs near 107 before we see any reductions....and, even then, it won't be much cooler. Is there a way we can just skip quickly over July and August??????

There are signs that our current heat wave might end by Sunday, in the mean time we will have to endure temps near or above 100 with high humidity for the next 4 days, 103 forecast for tomorrow. There are no drought buster rains forecast either, just a slight chance of isolated storms through the period. It sure is dry around here.
Funny thing is, in 6 months we'll all be complaining how cold it is.

BTW, they did get our power back on yesterday at home. Have to give the power company credit for having the line crews working on a holiday/the 4th. What a relief to have all the AC units/electric working again and not worry about it from the other side of the country!

The heat will break Sunday, here too but not the drought. 104 today, 105 tomorrow, 90 Sunday and then the 80's all next week. The only rain chances will be 20% Sat night, 30% Sunday and 20% Sunday night - that is it over the next 8 days! Yikes! ![]()

Historic Heat Wave Continues Through Saturday
The Indianapolis area is nearing the end of an historic heat wave… the likes the area has not seen in 76 years. To make matters worse, the drought conditions in early July are currently worse for the local area than in early July 1934 or 1936. The only times less rain fell from May 1-July 5 were in the years 1988 and 1895.
Most Hoosiers have never seen such prolonged high temperatures in their life. The average high temperature for the Indianapolis area for the 9-day period from June 28-July 6 was slightly over an incredible 100 degrees! High temperatures on Friday and Saturday may be the hottest since July 1936 and approach the all-time record high at Indianapolis of 106 degrees. The average high temperature for the 10-day period from June 28-July 7 will approach 101 degrees...second only to the July 6-15, 1936 period which was 103 degrees.
During this historic heat wave...the Indianapolis area will have broken or tied 6 daily record highs including the all-time record high for the month of June (twice) and could possibly approach the all-time area high of 106 degrees. The high temperature of 102 degrees on the Fourth of July was second only to the record high of 103 degrees set 101 years ago.
As of Friday afternoon, 2012 had the most 100 degree days since 1988 with 5. The Indianapolis area will experience another 100 degree day on Saturday before a cooling trend begins on Sunday. This will bring the total number of 100 degree days to 6…the most ever for a year since the 1936. Only the years 1936 and 1934 had more 100 degrees days...1936 a record 12 days and 1934 with 9 days.
The expected 4 consecutive 100 degree days will only be the 3rd such occurrence for the Indianapolis area since weather records began in 1871. The last occurrence was July 7-15, 1936 with a record 9 consecutive days. The only other time was 6 consecutive days from July 20-25, 1934.

I have read/heard from different outlets that the stable nice temps the country has experience in the 40s thru the current times were actually abnormal. The US weather from what they can tell from trees and other natural clues is normally more erratic then the last 50 years. If this is the beginning of what is actually normal erratic it will be interesting.

Our heat wave is supposed to end later this afternoon but temps could still near 100 before the front passes, after this past week my AC is waving the white flag.
Unfortunately only a 20% - 30% chance of rain today and tonight, after that, no rain is forecast for the next week. So the drought continues.

Hottest night in Indy in 75 years. No it wasn't at a dance club but the low only fell to 81. The hottest low temp since August 1936.
The NWS is still saying that it could get to 107, which would break the all time record.
jfw mentions the cold front. It's passing through Chicago right now. Dropped from 100 to 88 and some Northern burbs are in the 70's. Yeah baby!

Dave, that August of 1936 was when I decided to enter this world. My pop, who was a physician, always joked that I was the first baby he ever saw born with an already existing heat rash.
We had high of 107.7 yesterday afternoon. That's measured on north side of house, in the shadow of the house.....about 6 ft. above the ground.
Right now....12:44 PM it is 104.1 and climbing.
Forecast is for slight cooling and possibility of showers. I'll believe it when I feel the moisture falling on my face.

Me too DC now that I'm back home! Quite a shocker coming from SD, getting off of a real cold plane, and about melting in the heat.
I walked around the woods surrounding my house/yard yesterday with my son in the 95 degree heat. It's unbelievable how many more big trees came down and almost looks like tornado damage rather than straight 80mph winds. The big trees are fastly disappearing with huge ice storms, hurricane Ike winds, our storms this past Spring, and now this. Never have there been so many high-wind violent storms lately and the 100+ year old downed trees can attest to that. ![]()
Columbus tied an all-time record yesterday at 101 for the date. Hottest it's ever been there is 106 and with lots of summer left may reach that again.
I'm looking forward to the temps with highs in the mid 80's and lows in the high 60's this coming week.

Well, we've cooled off but because of constant rain! Power has already gone out twice and not even raining yet! But we lose power all the time here for no reason at all. ![]()

Spd that's what happens when the general consensus is less govern the better. Sometimes you reach the point government has to make some big business do the right thing. We had some ice storms a few years ago that shut down power over wide areas. The Utilities made all power companies clear out right of ways. Now when we have a storm in summer or winter the outages are very small and usually from a whole tree that fell. With the cleared right of way they could get to the one damaged span instead of having to clear the right of way with several spans damaged. The power companies were suppose to be doing this all the time but they had gotten slack and were saving money.
Any way the cold front has moved in with a thunderstorm and the temp has dropped from around 100 to 80. Will have to wear my long johns tomorrow with temps in the mid 80s.

CJ: Yes this heat wave. Half of me is saying that the heat wave is over and the other half says that we are not even into August, yet. We hit 105 twice this year, only one off of the record.
Indianapolis has not had an appreciable rain since early May. We are down almost 8 inches for the year, while Bloomington is down 13+".The forecasters seem excited about Friday and Saturday and say that we may have rain that lasts longer than 2 minutes. Last Sunday was close, Indy had rain to the South and Northwest but only 10 drops here. Do it yourself fireworks are still banned as is all burning. Read about the drought, here.

Rain, oh glorious rain! Some hydrologist said that we could get 2 1/2" rain from Friday to Monday and he said that would not even get your shoes muddy, lol.
- Friday Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. East southeast wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
- Friday Night Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Southeast wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
- Saturday Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 84. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
- Saturday Night A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72.
- Sunday A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 86.

Still at it here, and emptied 4" from gauges yesterday. No power outages yesterday or YET today, but news says many are without power. Non-stop local news coverage of rain, flooding has started, some creeks/bayous near to being out of their banks.
News said we've received more rain up to this time than ALL OF LAST YEAR! Feast or famine. ![]()
It has cooled off, and would be nice to enjoy if it would stop raining long enough.
On another note, a squirrel is hiding behind the big polycart (trash can) on back porch. He scurried up the tree when I put trash in, but was there yesterday. I fear he may be hurt or ill, squirrels don't hang out on the ground. ![]()

Our best chance of rain seems to be Saturday night and Sunday, only 30% - 40%. Temps supposed to be around 90 the next couple of days, climbing to mid and upper 90's next week.

Hey I'm sure those resevoirs could use it considering last year. Used to live just west of Lake Tawakoni and I know DFW gets a lot of their water from there.
As for the squirrel, he might just be looking for a dry place to sit. Probably getting trench-foot sitting in the tree in that rain.![]()
