Well Spd, Mean People Suck!, even if they're family. ![]()
I can't believe your power company gets away with such crappy service and constant outages. Seems like you're w/o power as much as it's on. And it has to be terrible in that heat and humidity. Can't PUCO or the county/state utilities commission do something about it? Maybe the CEO has stock in generator manufacturers??
They had a pretty dismal story on the NBC national news tonight called the "Scorched Earth". US is in the worst drought since the early 50's with crops dieing fast. Then they talked about the dangers of more huge forest fires. And where the fires wiped out the forests/ground-cover in Colorado they're getting ready for huge mudslides with the first heavy rains that fall. No-win situation.... ![]()

We got much needed rain at home last night. About three quarters of an inch in about half an hour. Narrow little storm that widened out as it moved out. No rain at work, 3 miles away. Today, it rained .3" @ work and hardly any at home. The airport didn't get any, last night, so they extended the longest dry spell (0.09") to 47 days. AND we had ANOTHER triple digit day, yesterday @ 101.
I am actually looking forward to November. ![]()

Got .30 inch of rain this morning in about 15 minutes, came down buckets. Hit 100 again yesterday, today is in the upper 80's but very humid, dew point around 75. We were just put under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 tonight, bring on the rain!

Was going to run to the store today but didn't since it was dark as night with thunder booming just N of us. So what did we get? - zilch and not a drop of rain! ![]()
Temps did drop quickly from 96 to 73 but the humidity didn't. Humidity is probably still high because of all the rain just N.
Yep Spd, cut the strings and/or just completely avoid them...

Not much to say tonight. Pant, pant.......our high reading occurred in the late afternoon and topped out a 109.2 degrees. It's not over either. The forecast is for even hotter tomorrow. No rain in sight. Some small thunderboomers built up out in North Central Kansas and moved straight east toward us but then the sun went down and they dissolved. Can you believe we may still have another month of this sort of thing to get through?

Wow Phil, you must be gettin' pretty crispy by now,
and ya had to go and remind us it's only July still.![]()
We hit 100 yesterday, 98 the day before, but only 95 today. We were lucky though, got a whole half inch of rain in about 30 minutes this evening. Now it's just a bunch of rumbling thunder. Looks like we might have a chance for a little more rain befor the night is out

Late last week they got 3" of rain just N or here and 2" just S. But we ended up with a measly 1/4".
I finally turned the AC off because of the cool nights. But we're in a pattern of huge day/night temp swings where it was mid-50's last night/earlier this morning and may hit 90 today. With the humidity so low (30%-40%) the heat isn't bad at all.
Don't think we're in a year with the 12-year or 17-year Cicada hatching cycles but I will say the Cicadas are tremendously loud around here in the woods. You can barely hear yourself think when outside.

We don't live in the woods, Uni but the cicada's are maddeningly loud here, too. This morning, black birds of some sort, were everywhere looking for cicadas. They beat the cicada killer wasps to the prey by about an hour.
We got about an inch of rain between early Saturday morning and daybreak on Sunday. The most rain since May 1st. The lawns do not look like hayfields any longer but still have the dormant look. The areas under the trees and around downspouts are vibrant green, however.

My bet would be they were either Grackles or Red-winged Blackbirds eating the cicadas Dave. I know Robins, woodpeckers, and some other insect eating birds feast on them too. No matter how many the birds eat they will never dent the population since there's so many cicadas in certain years.
Actually my grass is growing some from the cool nights and brief rains we've been getting. Last week was the 1st time I mowed it in 6 weeks!

Yup, Grackles! I'll have to mow my front yard, in a day or so. It has been forever. I may have to mow the downspout "delta's," too!

Our weather has become outright depressing. Another 100+ day here. It hit 106.5 degrees this afternoon. Even the Alf did not want to stay outside very long. at a time. But tonight he and I went for a walk at 8:30 and it was not so bad. Between 85 & 90. I finished watering the yard this afternoon. Won't do it again for 2 to 3 weeks. As I've said before.....just trying to keep the grass roots alive.
We have rain in the forecast but I'll believe it when I see it actually falling. I'm beginning to believe that living a few miles directly east of a large metropolitan area has an effect on our weather. Actually there is a name for it.......Heat Dome. All the heat retaining pavement, structures, etc. in the city results in the city creating it's own weather - so to speak. It seems like approaching storms and rain areas just seem to dissolve away as they get to Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri. So we get a big zero.

Yep Phil. I also live almost due East of a large metro. They call it an "Urban Heat Island," here. Often the airport, which is SW of the city, is 5-10 degrees cooler than downtown or points East.
We also have the disappearing rain syndrome where 7-8 times this year, widespread rains simply dried up before they get here. And then they build anew, 80 miles East of here. I'm not sure if the city heat stops them or not because they dry up like 80 miles West of town. That may be more of a time of day factor, or humidity.
It also doesn't' help rain events that our humidity has been so low, this summer. Rain simply can't start or continue when the humidity is lower than 30%. It was in the mid 90's yesterday but drier than Las Vegas. The sky was not deep azure blue like it gets in the fall but it was as blue as it ever gets in August, when it's that hot. Odd summer.

We had a storm come through here last night. I was sitting at a stop light and the wind was blowing so hard the very leading edge of showers was making drops go horizonal across the windshield.
Growing moss under the trees is looking good with all the showers. I too finally need to cut the grass.

Sounds like a dandy!! We had one like that awhile ago as I was leaving work...the rain came in SHEETS and sideways, too! I have leadfoot and I was actually CRAWLING my way home, follwing the tail lights on the car ahead of me. When I fnally got home, I sat in my car for at least 10 minutes til it slowed down a bit just so I wouldn't DROWN going from my car to the backdoor!!

Got some much needed rain, last night. Could use about 5 times that much. Looking at the NWS radar estimates, our neighborhood received between 1 and 1.5". Area to the North and West got over 3 and there were even some roadway flooding, which has been non existant for months.
Hope, Indiana, about 50 miles South had lots of wind damage.
More rain is possible today.
The NWS says that it''s possible that the heat may be over for the Summer as 1) in most drought years, the hot temps peaked by early / mid August and 2) all next week will be near normal, in terms of high temps - mid 80's.

Hey, good to see you Dennis and 108 does seem mighty warm! ![]()
It almost seems cold here at 69 w/75% humidity and will drop to 55 by morning.
We finally got 1"-2" of rain here the past couple days which was real nice. May receive some more this week and high temps will be a nice change from 95 a couple days ago.

Got a total of an inch and a quarter of rain over the last 2 days, no downpours just slow and steady so it soaked into the ground nicely. More rain is forecast Sunday night through Monday night, time to put some fertilizer on the lawn.
54 degrees this morning, down right chilly compared to what we had the past few months and there's no sign of the heat returning in the near future.

Hiya Dennis. Where the heck have you been recently?
We have had some break from the extremely hot 3-digit temperatures. Believe it or not hour high today was 78 degrees. WONDERFUL. By the time Alfie and I finished our walk this morning I was feeling the need for a jacket or sweat shirt. That breeze was rather cool at 69 degreest.
BUT.....by Wednesday the weather guys say we're going to be back at 100 degrees.
We've had 6/10" or rain so far in August.....about the same that we had for the entire month of July. We get another summer like this and we'll be planting cacti in the landscaping.

First day in months the AC didn't turn on, never made it out of the 60's, cloudy and off and on showers all day and just when I was getting use to sweating.
The big annual Air and Water Show along the lake front here in Chicago this weekend, supposed to be perfect weather both Saturday and Sunday, sunny skies and temps in the 70's.

The drought and heat wave are waning. Here in Indianapolis, the dormant areas are looking smaller and smaller. We picked up a quarter inch of rain, last night. This weekend is also supposed to be "about perfect," with highs in the mid to upper 70's.
Speaking of cicada's - I had an interesting occurance, yesterday. A cicada killer wasp crashed right into me - and he was carrying his prey! The hapless, dead cicada tumbled to the ground and the cicada killer fluttered around my face as if he were asking me what I had done with his luggage. He then spotted it and tried to pick it up but I put my foot down, so to speak.
It did not end well for the wasp.

Nice to see you, showtime!
We've had 104-108 feels-like temps, but got some much needed rain for the past 2 days. Really came down hard for a long time; some of the bar ditches were still full a hour ago! Can't say it feels any cooler though!
Speaking of cidadas, I'm finding dead ones all over, even in the atrium! No holes in them, and if birds got them, sure there wouldn't be bodies! Most are not even full grown. ![]()
I hate cicada killers, and wish they'd pick on something else, like flying cockroaches!!! ![]()

We have been getting at least a shower 3 or 4 days a week. I have found out with my moss project that if I leave the few walnut leaves that fall in the the still bare patches a sprig or two of moss will get a hold. If the birds or squirrels would quit digging up the old areas. I am learning what works and what does not. Keeping the area too clean from debris does not help. The debris make little dams that catch the loose moss and cause the water to puddle instead of running off during the really hard showers.

We got just a hair under half an inch of rain last night....and it has stayed pretty much cloudy all day today so it's been cooler. We need A LOT more rain. But we'll take that 1/2 inch for starters. We just hope Isaac comes up here into Missouri and dumps a few inches of rain on us. But the forecast does not predict that unless he changes course.

Hope we get some rain today but that would be a real fluke!
Was going to mow grass last week, just parts of it need it, but why cut it so it just burns up in the full sun/90 degree heat for weeks? Leaves falling from walnuts and ash trees is about like Fall. Only difference is they're just burnt up brown/yellow color from drought type stress conditions. Humidity running about 22% which seems like desert conditions to me!
Wishing those who may be in the path of Issac the best and be safe!

Last email update here was around 10P, so I checked their site directly and it's working for my area. Did you try another station?
Radar shows more rain tonight, and look at the heat index range for today!
Had actually been less not the past few days. Yeah, we don't need a hurricane, but I stocked up with extra spring water last week, and 2 more cases getting delivered today. Need to restock the critter food supply today!
We've got W. Nile deaths here and first time they've sprayed in years!
