Just got in a little while ago from taking Sabrina to the specialists Vets in town. They've concluded that she has congestive heart failure. IF she makes it through the next few days, she'll need 2 pills a day for the rest of her life. And may only live 2 mos. to a year.
She was rescued as a feral and this is just so unexpected and heartbreaking. We've had her for 9 out of her 10 years. :'(
The specialist just called and said she's actually going more downhill and may not make it through the night. Each time they open the oxygen chamber, she starts open-mouth breathing. They've had to put her on heat therapy to get her temp up to normal (for a cat). And there is a possible mass (cancer) in her abdomen which would explain the bloody stools that no one could figure out.
I just cannot believe this is happening...

Having just gone thru some of this myself recently, it is indeed a heartbreaking thing to go through. ![]()
Spd, I said this before and I will say it again. I know it isn't easy, but you have to think about giving Sabrina some peace and rest. Maybe it is time to let her go. It sounds like that would be the kindest thing to do right now.
I wish, when I finally realized that something was wrong with Tonka, that someone would have said this to me. No one wanted to because they didn't want to have me hurt and I understand that, but perhaps it would have helped me to think clearer and the decision would have been a bit easier and I could have saved my friend from the extra days of pain and suffering.
You know me and you know I would never make this kind of suggestion lightly. I also know it is one of the hardest things we end up doing as pet owners.
It would be an act of love and Sabrina would be waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge to say thank you.
You know where to reach me if you want to talk.

Spd, I am so sorry to hear that, but in a way, it's for the better and the decision was made for you.

My condolences Spd, My wife's first cat was diagnosed with cancer, and she decided to have the cat put to sleep. This is the second pet that we have had that passed, and it was like having a human family member go. If there was something that I could say to you that would take away the pain I would. Just know that there are those here who understand and are sympathetic to this unfortunate circumstance.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I have a kittah and a puppah and my puppah is going to be 10 this year. He is getting old and i can tell that he is slowing down(sleeping much more, not as energetic)
Are your other kittah's taking the loss well?

Thanks, to all who understand. :'-(
Hadn't slept for over 30 hours, so just woke a little while ago (after only sleeping for 6).
Getting ready to pick her up this morning, and hopefully our vet can squeeze in a necropsy. With the possibility of cancer also involved, it's important to know since her dad (the feral colony leader) died suddenly from undetected lung cancer about a year after we got him. :-( Other siblings are still with us.
I don't think the other cats are effected as she was pretty much a loner, but pretty much stayed by my side. It's weird in that Betsy and her weren't real friendly, but they would lay on the bed together with no fuss. But for the past 2 mos., Betsy would not come anywhere near the bed where Sabrina was. They say animals can sense age and sickness in one another, and maybe Betsy knew something was up?
Kitty breakfast was hard this morning without Sabrina being in *her* place. This is going to be a difficult drive... :'-(

I know exactly how spd feels, with Sabrina being his cat and with him most of the time. ![]()
Tonka was like that with me. He was my cat and was always with me wherever I was.
It will be hard for a while, but having the other animals around does help. When our fist kitty had to be put down at 6 months old, I was a basket case for months afterwards. We had no other cats at the time and I was adamant about not gettiing another one. Took my husband 13 months of trying before I gave in and Tonka was the result.
Knowing spd, there is another one out there who needs the same love and affection and care that he gave to Sabrina and gives to all of them and they will find their way to him. ![]()

Sorry to hear about your loss spd! Our Abby (Neelix) got sick a few weeks ago. Between the vet tests, a weekend at the animal hospital and all the meds, we spent over $700.00 to fix him up. He had a urinary track infection and stopped eating and drinking and was severely dehydrated. It sure was sad around the house for a while but he is "almost" back to his old self. What we won't do for our little family members.
All our thoughts!

A UTI in a male cat can turn very deadly in a short time. Tonka had that and developed the crystals with it. Real costly and time consuming and we almost lost him. Thankfully, we knew what to look for since then and caught it before it turned into the crystal situation again.
So many things can go wrong with these guys and yet they can't say what it is they are feeling or where it hurts. ![]()

same here pip, when our chazz got it costs us a grand, many trips to the vet, overnight stays and now prescription cat food. what can you do. spd, you doing allright tonight?...
Us too Dennis. Ever since Tonka's episode, we've fed these guys Hill's Prescription Diet WD dry food. Costly? Yes, but cheaper in the long run, if you get my drift. ![]()
It's lower in the content that can cause the bladder troubles for male cats. Not sure if it is the ash content or magneseum, but it seems to be better for them. I was feeding them Iams prior to that and our vet said feeding her cats Iams, ended up with problems in their male cats also.
I'm sure spd is still hurting real bad, but he will be back...when he's ready.
I told spd this quote when I PM'd him yesterday and it is so true.
From Roger Caras........
"Pets are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole."
So true, so very true.

Thanks, again, to everyone. Our regular Vet had a lot of surgeries today and we kept playing phone tag...as to whether or not she could fit in the necropsy. I ended up driving home with Sabrina (easier to say goodbye) and put her little teddy bear (that stayed with her at the Vet) in her arms. :'-(
Then our Vet called and said she was sorry for the miscommunication, but the Specialist Vet had offered to do the necropsy, free of charge. I think they are puzzled as well to whether or not she also had cancer. So, off for another drive, it's about 40 mi. round trip.
Left the info for her urn and what kind. I got them to give me a big lock of stripey fur (our Vet always does that), and they made a little pawprint with Sabrina's name (our Vet does that, too). I'll post a photo of her later...cat pics are on my travel HDD.
They have a great program there for payments, like a credit card you can apply for, and make payments over time with no interest (what I opted for).
Anyone in the Houston area should know they exist when your own Vet has run out of options. You need a Vet referral, but they have saved 2 of our cats when there was no hope. I don't know how they deal with such desperate cases, but I'm glad that someone can do this type of work.
And, yes, they are family members, so we find a way to finance their care. :-)

Here's a pic of Sabrina that I promised. The Specialist who did the necropsy called yesterday late with the results. She had Cancer, Lymphoma and it was all over, liver, kidneys, lungs, but not in the heart. Doc said she was just unlucky in having that all at once. Sabrina's dad died suddenly of lung cancer, so as I thought, this may be hereditary. ![]()
