Hope everybody has a great weekend! ![]()
I know many of us will spend some time this week getting ready for the big 4th of July celebration next weekend. Columbus has their big fireworks display, called "Red, White & Boom", a week from today. I used to take the family down there but now that the kids are grown don't feel like dealing with the crowd of 1/4 million anymore.
Have a good one and stay cool. ![]()

Always look forward to the 4th. Good friends gather at a nearby lake, bring their kids, grandkids, dogs. Lotsa BBQ and beer. If you get hot, just sit in the lake. Since we've had some rain this spring, the fireworks bans have been lifted, so the fireworks stands are going up all over. Funny, they are illegal in San Antonio (unless the city wants to set them off), and the cops sit at the city limits waiting for people to buy their stuff and take it back into the city (all the stands are outside the city limits). Should be a fun day -- happy 4th all! ![]()

Agreed, Uni. The older I get....the less I care for big crowds. If Shirley feels up to it...after her dental surgery....we're leaving town over the 4th. Fireworks are still legal in our little burg while many of the other Kansas City suburbs do not allow them. So friends and relatives come flocking here. The town turns into one continuous explosion from several days before to a couple of days after the 4th.
Turned on the TV this morning and was greeted by a message telling me AT&T appreciates my Uverse business so much that we're gonna get 4 days of free premium movie channels. Gee. Thank you AT&T. Oh....wait....I forgot.....we already subscribe to those channels and we're going to still be paying for them. WOW! Thanks AT&T. It's wonderful that you truly appreciate our business. We're soooooo excited.
Quite often we record some programs during the middle of the night and watch them later. Has anyone determined if these promotional messages will show up on screen and ruin the recorded program? Or does it show up only on the live screen and not on the recording? Just curious. It has not happened to us....YET.

Ohio has some real strict fireworks laws and I don't know if you are allowed to use anything but sparklers and maybe those cracker things you throw against a sidewalk.
Up until a few years ago I used to go to this Phantom Fireworks store about 10 miles from me. They sell everything so some friends and me would all kick in to buy a few hundred dollars worth of fireworks. We'd set them off at a buddy's 100 acre farm over his lake. We would not do it if conditions were dry. Those big mortars are the best; but also the most expensive. I remember one low sparkly thing that was like looking at 100 welding rods. You could not see a thing after looking at it. ![]()
Get this, in Ohio when you buy fireworks you have to show a driver's license and sign an official form that says you are going to set them off in an out of State city. What a joke and it's real funny to see the customers stammer and cannot think of any out of state cities. Some are not the sharpest tools in the shed. I always say Wheeling, WV and I'm sure it's illegal to set them off in the city limits. They don't care as long as you put something down.
Phil, I haven't been getting those AT&T messages on TV but have received a couple via email this past week. I get free HBO for 3 months since I'm such a good customer. Duh, already in my package. And then all I want is a rebuilt iphone for $100 if I sign up for wireless. Oh, well...

July 2, 1999, first time I flew Spirit, from Detroit to Ft. Lauderdale for work, started out bad. We boarded late, then after we took off, problems, and had to circle back and land. So we ended up taking off in another plane 4 hours late, get into Ft. Lauderdale 4 hours late (11:30pm) and saw all passengers waiting for what was supposed to be 7:30pm flight. ![]()
Return flight, the July 4th 7:30pm flight and it's on time. About 1 1/2 hours after takeoff, the captain comes on and says 'if you want see some fireworks, just look out the windows". Turns out I'm on the left side and most of them were on the left side, saw every mid size city to little burgs that were firing off fireworks, 100's of them that night.
Coming in for landing at Metro, flying over the cities around Detroit, seemed everyone was shooting up fireworks too and aiming for the plane. Talk about the best fireworks display ever that night.

I've been invited to a picnic at DYC on Belle Isle on the 4th. It would be cool to spend a little time motoring around the Detroit River some. But I plan to bike around the island, and then zone out.

Guys I found an Extension on Firefox called NoSquint that leets you custom set the text size on each site . Have not had time to really test it out.

Actually unneeded SKP, FF3.6.3 &.4 have been doing it for me for months. If you use Ctrl +, set the size type you want, next time that site comes up, it's the same size type as you set it up on the last visit. ![]()

Agree Chris and I use this FF "Text Zoom" feature too. Believe I learned it from someone in the forum and it could have been you. ![]()
Looks like you can also program FF for the minimum font size allowed as written here. Haven't tried this one.
Thought it was ironic that in order to take remote control of a PC through LogMeIn you had to download a Firefox plug-in. Who blocked this - Firefox! Hit allow, downloaded the plug-in, and the program works just fine. ![]()

This may be old news. If so I apologize. But I just stumbled across a little blurb in this morning's paper regarding Senator Lieberman's proposed bill to increase gov. control over the Internet. Should the president have the authority to turn it off? Here's a link to an earlier article. But I will make no comment. Just FYI.

On another subject......we saw a story yesterday on one of the channels (don't remember which one) about the 3rd co-founder of Apple. He was an engineer and apparently partnered with the other two founding fathers of the company. BUT....he was not comfortable with the "hard-charging" personalities of his partners so he sold out very early........FOR A LITTLE OVER $800. He'd be a billionaire+ now, if he had kept his interest in the company. He lives quietly in the little burg of Pahrump, Nevada (over on west side of the state almost straight west of Las Vegas) and has written a book about the venture. Since I don't follow Apple or anything to do with that company I was not aware he existed so the story was interesting to me.
Also, believe it or not, we have spent time in Pahrump, NV. A nice little place. Some good RV parks there.......and then there is also the "Chicken Ranch" on the edge of town. My wife didn't know what that was until I drove her down the road to find it. No we did not take a tour.

Phil I saw that story may have been 60 Min. or on the radio. Like you I had never heard of the guy. He seemed to be OK with his decision. How many people beat themselves to unhappiness and their company failed after all the hard work. You never know how your decision will play out.
There was an interview with Dr. Ned Hollowell and his wife a couples' therapist about their new book Married to Distraction. He is the leading expert on ADD. They were talking about how to improve your marriage if it had lost its spark. One of the examples was a couple was very successful but their relationship was much happier when they were starting out and broke. Material things alone do not make you happier. The book has a section to help improve your marriage in 30 minutes in 30 days. Basically it is help for a couple to start to reconnect when their lives have become too busy over time for a good relationship not because they hate each other.

The reason I liked the NoSquint extention was you can set the font size on each site instead of one size fits all sites. I used the middle roller button on my mouse to change the text size but it zoomed the whole site layout which caused problems. This program gives more fine tuning when it resizes the text.

Chris - Interesting story about flying on the 4th of July. Always wanted to do that - I bet that it would be a hoot, especially on a long flight, just after sunset. I saw a neat thunderstorm, from the top down in May 1996.

No fireworks on my flight but it was the first time I'd flown through lightning. I didn't realize it would be so weird, like sustained strobe lights and everything outside the plane being lit up and white. For some reason I kept thinking about that Twilight Zone episode ![]()

Know exactly what you mean Wendy. I got caught flying through a huge thunder/lightening storm in a smaller jet/airliner while flying to NC some years ago. Kept looking out the window to see if some creature was ripping the engine off/wing apart. Kept expecting to see this:

I remember THAT one. So when you looked out the window you didn't see any strange creatures hanging on out there on the end of the wing?
That dog photo is great, Uni. Can you imagine how difficult it must have been to get all those pups to stay lined up and not bolt?
We're taking off on Friday and heading south to visit friends and relatives in Kansas and Texas. I have a buddy in Texas whose laptop AND both his and his wife's desktops are malfunctioning. So I know that I'd better take my folder of app. discs. I may need them. I just hope that I'm smart enough to be able to help get things straightened out. At least he DID take my advice and purchased an external HDD to which he backed up all his digital photos files and other keepsakes.

Phil, the dogs in a line photo, w/caption, was sent to me via email. I just had to hunt the photo down on the web. Don't want to take any credit for it since it was from a Purina "Bark in the Park '10" photo array. Agree that it would be awfully hard to get all those dogs sitting in a line and bet it didn't last very long.
Have a safe trip and good luck fixing your friend's computers. Hope you aren't taking the flying car. At $200,000 a pop it may be a while before it becomes popular. Thought one of the article reviewers made a very good point. With so many horrible terrestrial drivers on the roads can't wait until we put them in the air. ![]()

Got a new ringtone! Have you seen the Geico commercial, where the "veteran Geico manager" and the Gecko are in the mensroom and he springs a new (boring) ringtown on the Gecko? Anyway, as he is ready to put his phone away, his phone rings with a "real" ringtone, a hip-hop song that goes something like "Ring-a-ding-a-dong dong." Too cool.
You can get it free at several places.

Neat Dave. We have a good friend that has a ringtone like one of the old dial phone rings. Then somebody comes on and starts screaming, "answer that d@m phone". We were in a crowded grocery with her once when her cell phone went off. You should have seen the heads turn and they thought I was the one yelling at her to answer her phone. It was hilarious. ![]()

Lots of rain here, courtesy of Alex...we sure need it, but not this much!
At least it might dampen (LOL!) the stupid fireworks activity this weekend.
