I am awake enough this Friday to start this weeks OFF TOPIC  thread. I like Standard Time. First really cold day here. Hope everybody has a warm weekend in your life even if it is cold outside.

I'm waiting for a plumber...my back cannot take laying under sinks these days.   Have had a leaking pipe under bathroom sink for over a month, but with Clovis being sick, it had to wait.  It's been leaking a quart every 2 days.  Figure this is the time to have new shut-off valves put under all the sinks, plus the wet bar.  Right now it's copper, so will have new faucets with the braided burst-resistant lines.  One faucet bib outside is leaking, new kitchen faucet is leaking at the top, a toilet is leaking...it's always something, but house is old, so it's done pretty well, I guess.

Nice and sunny here, but chilly; think we did get light frost last night, too tired to look; but could see on rooftops early this morning.  Boo-hiss, I HATE WINTER!

It is COLD here.   I saw a little of the Today Show and they were in Orlando wearing coats.  Looks like everyone is getting cold weather.

At least the cold weather in those states doesn't last as long as it does up here.  Of course this is better than states northwest and northeast of here.  Whew!!

Been busy.  Not on computer much this week.  Bought new computer desk....much bigger than old mini-version.  It was delivered in a box.  Had to be assembled.....and me with my arthritis.  Then....found warped panel.  Manufacturer replaced it but took almost a week for shipping.  Parts all over living room....which is the only place big enough to do the assembly.  FINALLY....got basic desk finished yesterday.  Today I worked on the hutch but finally, this evening....my joint pains go to me and I had to quit.  I'll pick up on it again tomorrow.  Only reason this has been worth it is because it was half price.

I'm becoming even more of an Apple hater.  New OS upgrade for the Ipad...iOS 5 I think it's called.....a mess.  Apple apparently decided it would be a good thing to group all news sources under one icon.  Problem is.....my wife's newspaper she reads so much now takes about 50 times more time to download than it did before with the iOS 4.  I went to Apple web site to try and find a way to communicate with them.  They could not have made if more difficult if they had tried.....oh wait a minute.....maybe they did it on purpose...ya think?  I finally ran out of patience and gave up.

Also I'm pretty put out with AT&T.  The 16 mb per second speed I signed up for a trial period?  Well....I've never seen anything higer than 12.  Tonight it was speeding along at about 8 mbs.  In February, when it comes time to make the decision whether to keep the service, I'm gonna need some guarantees or forget it.

Only thing good around here this past week has been the weather.  We finally go decent rains.  Total of 3 inches this week and 1.3 inches the week before.  It's amazing how quickly the plant life responds to it.  Too late for our tomatoes but the grass is responding well.  We had 27 degrees last night....and then it got up to 64 today.  Could hardly get Alfie to come into the house.  He was really enjoying the outdoors today. 

Our neighbor has a new Yorkshire Terrier puppy.  Little Peppermint.  She is about 9 weeks old now and so tiny.  Alfie doesn't quite know how to handle the situation.  He wants to play with her and she is a feisty little creature....always comes back for more if he bats her with a paw and rolls her over.  I can't get over how little she is.  Hope he and his girl friend know what they've let themselves in for.  We had a Yorky years ago.  There is a good reason they are called "tiny tyrants".

I did iOS 5 and are you talking about notifications in the dark box other than that all my icons for the news are stil seperate BBC,CBS,ABC AND CNN. All my notifications or alerts are in the same box then I choose which one I want to read up on. I do like the new gestures so I can go from one app to the other without going home first.

I haven't been able to get it yet, but saw a story on TV that people are complaining about the battery fix--it's not working for everyone.

I have not noticed a difference in battery life on my phone still the same which I never had a problem but my iPad has improved.

Not just coats but heavy North Face jackets, but they may still be in shorts.

Finally.  The desk is finished and my desktop PC is back up and running.  Still have to install a few of the peripherals.  I'm gonna have to purchase some longer USB cables....or some extensions.  Some of mine are just too short to make it through the provided holes and back to the PC.  Yep...it's a big desk.  "L" shaped, 58" on each side.

Well....I did not know I was psycic.  Apple must have heard my wife and I grumping about the extreme slowness of her electronic newspaper downloads.  An update came through last night for her Ipad.  I downloaded it and installed it for her.  Now things really zip.  She commented that today's issue of The Daily (news corp.) was already downloaded and ready to read without her having to click on the icon as in the past.  Much better.

I was premature with my relief.  My wife's Ipad is back to taking forever to download from the Internet.  I wonder if there is a way to go back to version 4 of the OS.

It has come to my attention that several people are misuing the word "loose" when they actually mean "lose"  To help these people out, here are Dicitonary.com's definitions for the words "lose" and "loose":  

lose

verb (used with object)

1.to come to be without, through accident, theft, etc., so that there is little or no prospect of recovery: I'm sure I've merely misplaced my hat, not lost it.

2.to fail inadvertently to retain (something) in such a way that it cannot be immediately recovered: I just lost a dime under this sofa.

4.to be bereaved of by death: to lose a sister.

5.to fail to keep, preserve, or maintain: to lose one's balance; to lose one's figure.

adjective

1. free or released from fastening or attachment: a loose end.

3. uncombined, as a chemical element.
