Is it time? Trouble with two hour naps is that they interfere with getting to sleep at bedtime.
Welcome to another week. I've already expounded on #227 so I'll just pass this along and get it going. Time to take the pup out for his final draining anyway.

Ah, nap time, my favorite part of the day. Two hours is a bit long for me, I find about an hour or so, mid afternoon, works wonders.

My boss
had already gone to bed. At my age 580 miles is a long, tiring drive in one day. So I guess I was just pooped out more than usual.
My wife's new iPad 3 came at 10 AM this morning. The UPS driver was in a hurry. Said he had a truck full of them. We got her account and apps successfully transferred and she has been using it all this evening. She reports that the screen is sharper, brighter and more colorful. But most important is that everything happens faster. Probably the result of the new processor. Amazing. It was shipped from China just 5 days ago....according to the UPS tracker. Went to Alaska....then to Kentucky and on to Kansas City. Now we'll need to go shop for a protective cover or case that she likes. Now we need to find a way to sell #1.

Now Phil, we know you are going to be stealing borrowing that new iPad from your wife for viewing your photos! ![]()
Received the ad from Apple today to "buy it now". Try out the 1080p HD video recording w/auto stabilizer and let us know what you think?

Oh I get to play with it once in a while. Then wipe it down because she dusts it for fingerprints every morning.
Of course this is her second one. Santa gave her an iPad 1 a year ago this past Christmas. Almost immediately, the 2 came out and I was royally ticked off at Apple about that. Then....with our wedding anniversary coming up, I teasingly quizzed her about getting an iPad 3 and what color she'd like....black or white. Well....much to my surprise the reaction was NOT negative and the color choice was white. So...what the heck....I put in the order...and it came today. Maybe Saturday....if she is a good girl....I'll drive her over to the Apple store and let her pick out a case if she wants one.
I really doubt if she uses the camera very often. But...again I could be surprised. Wonder if she'll let me use that old one.

Hey Phil, I have access to a #1 version and was wondering if there is a way to stream/play music sitting on a windows unit without loading i(wannapuke)Tunes on my windows unit?

I have not discovered a way to do that, C.J. I was playing with the iPad 1 a while ago and I'm able to go to any of the many audio streaming web sites and listen. For example, my musical tastes run to classical. With the browser on the iPad I can go use my bookmark list and pick any of dozens of music sources on-line. Then I can let the music play while I do other tasks on the Pad. But, no, I haven't been able to access any of the hard drives.....internal or external....on my home net to play music stored on them. I'm not saying that there isn't a way to do that....but this neophyte has not found it if there is.

About the only thing I stream off the internet is my local NPR station. I have around 150 Gigs of music, so I guess I have to set up a server for it.
This just emphasizes my stand that if the wife wants something portable, it won't be an iPAD. Probably be looking at one of the new ASUS units.

I have to ask why the hate for iTunes other than its Apple's.
I use several different software from all brands if it works I don't care who made it
if you can find a better Office program than Microsofts show me if you can find a better music player that will integrate with all my devices than iTunes show me.
No bias when it comes to tools I want what will get the job done the best it can be done. I use OSX, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10 I refuse to be shut out do to an operating system they all have their plus and minus.

We've used the iTunes successfully to carry out the various functions needed from it for the iPad. In the case of her first iPad we had to completely upgrade the OS right out of the box. Had to install iTunes on a PC and then plug the iPad into it and go from there. We've needed iTunes several times since then....to backup the iPad and carry out "major" upgrades in the OS. It has always worked. I think that the problem with some folks (from personal experience) is confusion caused by the name of the program. The connotation is that it is a program only for acquiring music when really it is a general purpose app that Apple uses for a number of purposes.(hope I said what I meant)
In my case I've used the iTunes app on my PC laptop to access all those various classical music radio stations and services from all over the world.
I do find it somewhat interesting that the iPad has not yet been cut completely loose from the computer.....either PC or MAC. It appears to us that if we did not have a regular computer there would be certain tasks that we'd have to drive to an Apple Store to do. But I may be wrong on that.
Right now I'm hiding out of sight of my wife and remaining very quiet. It's a "don't speak to me" evening. For years she has used "Quicken" to keep our records but this is the first year that she has elected to try using Intuit's "TurboTax" to prepare our income tax return. It was a bad, bad idea. Don't believe all that hype about how easy it is. Supposed to be able to import data from Quicken to the TurboTax program and go from there. WRONG! Just got an "error" report so she is doing the entries manually.......AND I'm staying out of the way. After all these married years I've learned to do that.

Well, other than it's Apple (like that aint enough
), I don't like overbearing, overcontrolling, continuously updating and breaking software. I don't need anyone telling me were I can put my music and videos and how I can play them and at what bitrate I can transfer them at. I don't even like Windows media player past version 10 because it tries too hard to be an iTunes clone beyond that version. I don't need to have my media approved (or liked) by anyone but me, so any social networking cruft wrapped up in the software is a waste of my prrocessor and internet. I don't need ratings or to have my media genre-ized.
Right now I use VLC or Windows Media Player 10. Neither tries to "take over" my media and both have less than a 30 MB footprint.

However, I don't usually import anything from Quicken to TurboTax, as it's easier and gives you more control to just manually enter the proper numbers. It's real easy to just run whatever report you need in Quicken, and type the resulting numbers in to TurboTax. In Quicken 2012, there is a Tax Summary report that gives you totals for all the important tax categories, like mortgage interest, investment interest, property taxes, etc.
I also run a report in Quicken for spending in all categories, then move the numbers from all those categories where I paid sales tax (like auto repair, restaurants, electronics, etc.) into a spreadsheet. Then I add those up and figure out how much sales tax I paid, and in my state (Texas) that's deductible.

To completely cut the cord to the Mac or PC to the iPad you would need a full fledged OS this has been tried in the past by both Mac and Windows affiliates they were heavy, costly and went through the battery it is and will continue to be a supplement to a real computer till technology can overcome those hurdles.
As for having all my music in one place great idea no fragmented files as to bitrate it can be controlled but being a Hi-Fi nut all mine or in lossless and while a few selections in Rock are noticeable its always noticeable with Classical.

Back when I started "archiving" music (nearly 20 years ago), I was planning on doing everything in lossless but found the space required (much smaller hard drives back then) and time required (multiple passes) and already declining auditory capacity, I figured it was not required, so I ripped everything in the highest VBR available in Windows Media Player. My tracks range from 360Kbs to 750Kbs, with a few dozen at around 1.2Mbs, which is more than enough for my now even more declined hearing.
I just checked and I'm at 14,637 "tracks" with around 20% being full albums, so if I had decided to use lossless, I would probably still be ripping CDs (or LPs)

I understand I have redone my colection a couple of times and it is to time consuming to do it again but thank God lossless easily converts over and I am not saying I will not do it again I just don't plan on it. To be honest of late I will pull out the CD,SACD or DVD-A and listen to it for serious listening and have a few in Blu-ray which I find
very entertaining especially if you are a Pink Floyd fan Live At The Albert Hall also
Sheryl Crow.

Yup, got Dark Side Of The Moon on SACD. Ummagumma (one of my favorites) I've got sampled at 945Kbs VBR.
Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict is absolutely awsome on a set of studio cans.

Have you all seen the flyers from Dish on the Hopper DVR? I'm sure that there is more to the story but - one of the key pouints is instant Video on demand for the big four's primetime offerings (ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX). That part would be nice on U-Verse as it would free up a recording stream and then you could watch the "big four " show later. They also advertise recording up to 6 live HD channels and being able to watch 4 HD programs on different TV's. Am I the only one that feels that U-Verse's DVR is a little bit lagging in features, development and such?

Yup, been thinking about switching out my 722s for the new system but there are some unknowns still. Yah, they have the Hopper (DVR) which can recieve up to six streams but the two primetime streams are only recieved during primetime and I cannot determine whether they install an extra LNB for the primetime streams or if the system relies on broadband for those two streams.
It does tout a 1TB drive though, and the capability of having all streams coming into one box would be more elegant than my two 722s stacked up under my TV.
Another perk of Dish is I get to use external hard drives for additional storage or back-up of the DVR.
IMO, if this gets off the ground proper, Uverse will be in some serious trouble as far as TV service goes because right now Dish has AT&T's customer service beat not by a mile, but by astrnomical units.

Plus, I would have to keep U-Verse for Internet anyway, so my total costs would likely go up.

It not quite as good as it sounds. The 6 streams are only available during primetime and 4 of those streams are on the network channels (CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox). Thus, only 2 streams can be used to record non-network channels. The 4 network streams are what creates the instant On Demand with is available for 8 days after the initial air date.

Right - and I figured as much BUT hopefully this sort innovation will get other providers thinking. They either sink or swim. I don't see the same innovation with U-Verse that i did 24 months ago. I prolly would never switch to a DBS system but Hopper sounds very cool. Plus the Slingbox adapter, and a a few other gems.

Well, I just spent an hour "talking tech" with one of the advanced engineers and this is what I learned. Apparently the advertising is somewhat incorrect. The Hopper is technically a 7 stream DVR, with 3 anytime any channel streams and up to 4 more streams between 7 and 10 PM. If your in an area that does not have all four networks available as local HD channels you will not get all four extra streams. If the "Primetime Anytime" is activated, those 4 extra streams are automatically recorded to the DVR hard drive in an eight day FIFO buffer. The Hopper has a 2 TB hard drive, 500GB for the 3 anytime streams, 500GB for the 4 extra streams and 1TB reserved for future use and operating system. One Hopper will feed three Joeys with independant streams, You can use more than three Joeys on a Hopper but the extra Joeys will have to be a mirror of one of the initial three. If you want more than three Joeys with independant streams you will need an additional Hopper. At this time multple Hoppers cannot pool their resources although there are a number features that have yet to be implemented. The Hopper also comes with apps similar to what you would find on a bluray player (which of course requires a broadband connection).
Pricing is not too bad either. If I were to trade in my two 722 receivers for a Hopper and 3 Joeys my bill would only go up about $14 although a 2 year contract is required if you want to go the Hopper route.
