Welcome to Friday.
The air has been so dry here that every night provides an awesome star gazing experience. Wednesday night I saw a wonderfully bright International Space Station flyover - the brightest object in the sky except for the rising moon. I often check Heavens-above.com for predictions but I saw this one without any advanced knowledge. I knew what it must have been and afdter watering the plants, I verified it.

Quiet in here this week. Went to the NASCAR Camping World truck race on Friday night at TMS. Great race. Got their early enough to see TMS doing ride alongs in an Indy car at 185MPH. Believe I'd need a change of underwear afterwards, but man do I want to do that. Also got to see the enire field practice before the truck race started. Had a blast. Now that father in law lives here planning on getting season tickets to TMS for next year. Will get to see 2 Sprint Cup, 2 Nation Wide, 2 Camping World and 1 Indy Car race for the season. Looking forward to it. Now if I can win the lottery and see the races in the suite that I was in this past weekend. Wife got 4 tickets from a vendor in a suite just past turn 4. Wasn't the best seats in the house, but it was high enough to see the entire track.

Glad you're feeling better CJ! My wife got a free pneumonia vaccination at work the other day. I didn't even know there was such a vaccination??
Hey OUfan, sounds like a great weekend with a great spot to watch the races.

Glad you're healing, C.J. Being sick is just a loser from any angle.
Hurray!! We finally got some rain....1.3 inches last night. When I took the Alf for his morning walk I could see the tomato plants and the grass perking up and looking greener. It sure happens quickly. Can't afford to water in this little burg. Much too expensive. Usually in mid-summer we just let the grass go dormant and then, come fall and more rain, it snaps out of it and greens up quite quickly. But the trees, bushes and other foliage just wilt away and sometimes it's fatal. So I use my deep waterer and shoot some H2O to the roots. They also all get fertilized in the spring AND again in the fall...especially the trees.
We're having leaf curl problems with some of the tomato plants. I've researched it and, except for aphids, there doesn't seem to be any known reason for it. The plants are green....no rust or fungus spots...so it's a puzzle. Almost all the sites I checked said that the curl did not hurt the plant or the yield. But I don't believe that because the ones that are suffering from the leaf curl the most have also suffered slowed (stupid filter wouldn't let me use the correct word here) growth. Tomato plants are always difficult to take care of.
When it started to cloud up yesterday evening and rain was in the forecast....I performed my anti-grub worm treatment on our lawn. I was out there at 8:30 cranking my spreader and walking briskly back and forth around the yard. Then the rain came during the wee hours so hopefully that will prevent any grub infestation.
The time is coming....not too far down the line....when we are going to have to hire all of our yard work done. Just getting too doggone old. My wife suffers with arthritis and a bad knee....and I suffer muscle weakness and oxygen shortage from these darn bum lungs of mine. I dread having to hire it done....not only because of the cost....but also because I think that, basically, the exercise of working in the yard is good for both of us. Otherwise we'd just sit around and waste away.
Gonna be busy all week with company from Texas and taking them to visit some of the historic sites here in the Kansas City area. So won't be on here much. I hope you all have a great one. Take care & stay healthy.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Does it not sound like from this headline that two cats were arrested? Tinker Bell and Fluffy, how do you plead?

Great grammar headline! That could be a new line of work, can't sell your house? Invite those folks with cats and get it condemned! Feel bad for the cats. ![]()
Good you're feeling better, CJ!
Hot here, and it's bad if I'm (I HATE WINTER) complaining!
Our BB35 has a leak and is listing. Last I heard they were sending divers in yesterday to try and find the leak. It's not the first time, and expected as she's an old gal!

Phil, just curious if you or any of your neighbors have applied a turf weed killer to their lawns lately? If so it may be 2,4-D causing your tomato leaf-curl which is widely used in many lawn herbicides. The worst is when it's sprayed as a liquid by lawn care companies when it's hot out and can vaporize/travel long distances. Here's an article on tomato leaf curl which mentions 2,4-D damage.
I've probably mentioned before where this area farmer near the park I used to work at sprayed his fields with 2,4-D in preparation for no-till planting. It was 80-85 out causing the chemical to vaporize, traveled almost 2 miles away with a slight breeze, and "bit" every heirloom/old-world variety fruit tree in our orchard. Luckily it just caused leaf curl and no permanent damage to the trees.
I planted 8 tomato plants, 2 zuke plants and a couple cucumber plants last weekend. Late start and now it's the war in protecting them from the critters. Also had to plant them all in large pots due to the Black Walnut trees roots putting out toxic chemicals which will kill the tomato plants and some other vegetables.
Hey Spd, surely they will find and fix the leak on BB35. ![]()

About the only weed killer you can use on St. Augustine is atrazine. Atrazine will only kill broadleaf weeds (dollarweed, chickweed, ragweed, dandelion, ivy, oxalis, purslane, white clover, etc.), it won't kill any of the grassy weeds (dallisgrass, johnson grass, crabgrass, sedges). Too much atrazine will really weaken St. Augustine and leave it vulnerable to fungal infections like gray leaf spot and brown patch.
You can use preemergents safely on St. Augustine, but if the weeds are already growing, the best weed control is to put on a pair of gloves and start pulling.

And Atrazine will kill trees. Roots all under the grass, so I stopped using it years ago.
What I really hate is all these chemicals get washed into the storm sewers with rain/sprinklers. ![]()

Some interesting info SJ and Spd. Yeah, 2,4-D isn't good at all around those types of grasses and can see why they don't use it down there. Plus it can easily contaminate ground water, where there's a shallow water table, which is probably what you guys have. It's also deadly to fish and aquatic life if sprayed onto, or runs into, surface water.
I quit using 2,4-D some years ago for fear of contaminating my water well and it's 200' deep!

Talk about drift, One of my neighbors along the back yard fence line decided to Roundup a big patch of his yard in prep for re-landscaping. problem is he did it on a day with steady 20-25 winds. Needless to say all along his portion of my fence line (about 60 feet) is dead grasss now almost 8 feet into my yard. Moronicus Dumbassus. ![]()

Learning alot here and realizing the joys of home ownership that I'll soon be dealing with. Not sure what type of grass they are going to lay down but I'll keep the weed killer in mind when I have to use it.

Check out the fertilizer schedule for Gulf Coast grasses at Randy Lemmon's site:
http://www.randylemmon.com/lawns/fertilize.html
I also occasionally use Calloway's organic fertilizer (available at Cornelius). This stuff is great because it's 100% natural (don't touch it, LOL) but doesn't have an odor. The grass really responds well to it, not only with a nice green color, but it completely changes the ecosystem within the grass. You'll see lots of wildlife pop up in the yard after you put this stuff down, including lizards, salamanders, newts, frogs, etc. all of which eat insects. Plus it changes the pH of the soil and makes the entire yard really resistant to fungus.

I've always used Nitro-Phos as well (can also be found at local Ace). Do you have a lot of trees, SJ?
2 trees aren't feeling well again this year, though well-watered through the drought. Some neighbors cut down trees as they didn't make it (they didn't water their grass either!).
Yeah, lots of fun with home ownership, OU, but you'll never be bored or lack for a project, LOL! One thing to make sure is they grade your land properly. That is near-impossible to fix once other homes are built around yours (but you may not be dealing with subdivision crap!). Once houses went in behind and other side, we had drainage problems that are still a struggle. Added 4 more french drains in back as water comes from where new houses made the land grade higher!
Wish we lived in the middle of a forest, like Uni! ![]()
