Happy Friday the 13th, again. ![]()
More rain expected here. Local news did a survey and over 80% (who voted) are NOT sick of the rain (yet). Beats the drought we went through last year.

Thanks for the reminder it's Friday the 13th. I have 2 black cats and I'll have to see if I can't walk across their paths! LOL.
Odd that you were in a terrible drought in Texas last year and we had one of the wetest years on record. Now the roles are reversed but we're finally supposed to get some of your Southern rain moving in tomorrow. Bout time.

Yeah, no choice in the weather; guess this means we'll get snow this year, and freezes. ![]()

Well this week is WOTT is starting livelier than last weeks. Just saw all the flooding in the Houston area. Not as bad as what parts of Florida went through recently, but bad enough. We could use SOME of that rain up in the DFW area.
Less than a month away from moving into new house. Supposed to have builders walk though on the 23rd and close on the 1st or 2nd provided everything is finished. Been checking at least every other day and have my own running list of things that need to be corrected before we sign. Not going to give it to builder until walk through though since they are trying to push us to close before end of month which would make first mortgage payment on 1 Sept. Waiting 2 days would make it 1 October. SInce we introduced our real estate agent to this builder she has brought 3 other buyers to them so in the past 6 months we've brought them close to $1 million dollars. They should treat us with the red carpet.

Have you ever seen the new Coke "Freestle" machine? If so, have you tried all 127 flavors? These guys have! Yowza!

This isn't a hurricane like FL, but reminds me of TS Allison where we got flooding everywhere, even freeways underwater and our underground tunnel flooded! Bayous and creeks in the area are really high. Biggest fear is the Corps will pull another one like a few years ago and NOT close the flood gates on the Reservior! Our area is drainage for downtown, but now it's populated. Funny, how the rich area of town doesn't get flooded. ![]()
OU, bet you're getting really excited about the house!
DH, now that Freestyle thingy sounds gross to me, but son has done a mix at the fountain ever since he was a kid. Saw the nasty comments about old people and little kids holding up the line because they are slow.

I like the CocaCola Freestyle machine. However, it does seem to make a line as people try to figure out what they want. The menuing system is not all that friendly, IMHO. As far as kids mixing drink flavors, they do that already. Heck, I put regular Coke in my Cherry Coke to tone down the cherry. :-)
Yeah, we've had overcast and rain all this week. But it's pulled the high temperatures down from over 100 to the low eighties (high termperature yesterday was 79). We were on the borderline for drought conditions and this has helped a bunch. And the air conditioner is especially appreciative.
Good luck with the house, OU. I remember when we were building our first house, the punch lists, setting the closing date. Back then, I didn't have a clue what to check for. I was only 21. If I ever build another house, I almost pity the poor contractor.

Speed, getting really excited. They got the kitchen cabinets installed and supposed to have the counter tops in yesterday. Going to go by this evening and see the progress. Back yard should also be fenced in as well by now, the posts were up. Looking forward to no more apartment life and having a back yard for my 3 1/2 yo son.
Firehouse subs and some Wendy's in our area have those soda machines, they are pretty cool.

Thanks, JefferMC.
I'm sure our salesperson is already sorry we bought a house from him. Eithe wife or I are over there at a minimum every other day inspecting. Luckily father-in-law and I caught a mistake in the kitchen cabinets before the appliances were installed and granite countertops cut. Already have my list that I'm making before out builders walk through to see if they catch their own mistakes. If not they will need to correct after walk-thru and before closing.

Yes, several times. Spent 45 seconds the first time, even after having watched another family member scroll through the menus to pick out what she wanted.

I'm kind of sensitive to caffeine, so I typically drink caffeine-free Diet Coke. However, the flavor does leave something to be desired ... Diet Coke with Lime is much better. But Diet Coke with Lime is not available in a caffeine-free version.
But you can get it with the Freestyle machine. Caffeine-free Diet Coke with Lime, no problem.

Gosh....what would my life be like without caffeine? LOL
Got up this morning.....took Alfie oiur for his walk.....big dark clouds building in the west and moving our way. My heart skipped a beat with anticipation. Some places got some rain but it all dissolved and disappeared before it got to us. I couldn't believe it. So we are still burning from heat and no rain. The forecast is for even more heat.....107 again by next weekend.
The ground has dried out so severely that it is pulling away from the house footings and from around all our sidewalks and the driveway.
Looks like we're not going to get any tomatoes to speak of. Too dry. Even with our watering the extremely high temperatures over so long a time period has stopped them from setting on and those that have don't get very big.
Whoops. It's after 9 PM and Alfie is telling me it's treat time. So ol' dad better get with it.

Haven't seen them at our local 5 guys, but have at Firehouse in DFW. Would like to see more locations get them. The drawback for restaurants is that they need to have more syrup than they typically use on a regular soda fountain.

I read where most Burger Kings are installing the Coke Freestyle machines. Supposedly if you enter your zip code in the below link it will show where the machines are near your location. I couldn't get it to work but may be just because there aren't any around here yet.

When we were on vacation N. of SD we went to a huge nightclub/bar and saw a group called "Abbey Road" who imitated the Beatles. They put on a real good show and went from the Beatles earlier years, dressed the part, to their later years. None of them looked like the Beatles except for this one guy who did look a lot like John Lennon and even sounded like him. Pretty neat after a break they came back dressed in "Sgt Pepper" garb which brought back a bunch of memories.
They had good food at this nightclub too. Don't think I've ever seen filet mignon sliders with gouda cheese but they were delicious. Not the best place if you don't drink though since they had no iced tea, the only diet drink was Diet Coke, and didn't even have coffee. So much for those trying to sober up before leaving or driving home.
Ah, finally a steady rain is here! ![]()

I guess their site isn't working for the locator, and I even tried their phone app, no results for all of the city.
I usually go to 5Gs on 10 (across from Memo. City), but they don't have them there. Just wanting to make sure Houston isn't being left out, LOL! I'm always on the run, so I rarely do anything but drive-thru! There's even a drive-thru Subway here.
Glad you're getting rain, Uni.

Must not be any of those new Coke drink machines around here either. I entered our zip and clicked on the button. Got nothing.
We loved the little story about the Carolina wrens, Uni. After all the little guy's work to provide a nest that meets his mate's approval.......he deserves a rest. Wonder if he is hen pecked....no that should be wren pecked.....too.

The app works for me. Try ZIP code 29615, and you get several within a 5 mile radius. I note that once you get to the results page, it appears that you can change the ZIP and radius, but nothing happens; you have to go back to the search page and hit FIND.
I think all Firehouse Subs are supposed to have them now. Some, but not all, Five Guy's have them here. A Burger King and a couple of local mexican chains.
The syrup isn't the only drawback. It does cause a bottleneck at the machine from all the choices. Average service time probably doubles.

I did get the App to work last night--none in the sticks where I am, but more business-oriented areas. And, of course, we all know this fizzy sugar-water is not good for us in large quantities. But, I need my water ice-cold and it's never cold enough away from home. Plus, I only like spring water!

Yeah, I also got the app to work and looks like some Wendy's have the machines but nearest one is about 8 miles away.
A restaurant/business called "Noodles and Company" also has them in Columbus but I'm not familiar with them.
Gee, according to a link within your link we should also be cancelling our UV services if we want to add years to our life. ![]()

After fiddling around with it for a few minutes I finally got the Coke machine locator working. There's a couple about 5 or 6 miles west of us in some sub shop. Not worth the trip. Actually I like my coke straight up. We drink the Zero. I like the cherry flavored Coke Zero.
Broke down and watered the lawn today. It won't green it up but maybe we can keep the grass roots alive. Our heat wave continues and, in fact, is getting worse. Highs approaching 110 by next week. No rain in the forecast and it may be late in August before we get any. Tomorrow I'm going to deep water our trees. Sure don't want to lose any of them. They're expensive.

Phil, I meant to say that fact about the male Carolina Wrens building multiple nests for the female to inspect was told to me a few years ago by one of the top bird authorities in Ohio. I worked for him as a naturalist many years ago and he wrote a weekly nature article for the Columbus Dispatch up until recently. He actually lives for viewing birds and is a recluse down in the Hocking Hills of S. Ohio. The Hocking Hills is a beautiful area full of sandstone gorges carved out by melting glacier waters. Below is a photo from one of the 9 state parks in the area.

And speaking of trees. I have 3-4 volunteer Redbud Trees about 10' tall growing right next the house. They've started dying fast from the heat even though I'm watering them some. Sad and will be a shame to loose such beautiful trees which are normally hearty.
I'm making sure I keep my bird bath filled since the evaporation/birds empty it daily. Seems like about the only water on top of this ridge and doubt if the birds are getting much moisture from the black oil sunflower seed I feed them. I had about a 6' tall volunteer sunflower growing in my flower bed and was interested to see how big the head grew. Forget that and the Goldfinches have already eaten moist of the newly forming seed for moisture.

Hope your volunteers make it, Uni! That's all I have lately in the backyard, but looks natural as nature intended.

LOL, JefferMC!
Spd, unfortunately those volunteer Redbud trees decided to grow in the gravel right next to my brown house. They grow best under a large tree canopy where they're partially shaded. But they grew in probably the brightest S. facing area in my whole yard and it hasn't been a problem until this year's intense heat/drought.
Thanks SKP. I would bet the Hocking Hills doesn't look so pretty now and the photo must have been taken during wetter times. My son went canoeing/kayaking on the Hocking River last weekend with a bunch of friends. They found themselves often having to carry the canoes/kayak through the shallow waters since they were scraping bottom. He said the water was freezing compared to the 90+ degree heat and most of the streams/rivers are spring fed down there.
I don't know why Charlie's laughing so hard about his clone; "Furminator Charlie"??

If I remember correctly, Uni, there is a beautiful state park in Brown County, OH. Don't remember the name. My first visit was with my parents around 70 years ago and then we returned with our middle son and his family back in the late '90s. I agree Ohio is a beautiful state. Very photogenic. That is a gorgeous shot of the waterfall and little lake.
Scenic landscapes and nature are my favorite camera subjects. I know there are many beautiful things here in Missouri but since we settled here in 2006 I just have not felt good enough to pursue much of my beloved photography hobby.
