Welcome to Friday!
I now have true "High speed" Internet! I went from (the no longer offered) 1.5 mbps to 12 mpbs. Yay! I got an offer that I just could not refuse!

Wow, 1.5, that must have been brutal. ![]()

Every time we move up, I don't really notice a difference in it being faster.
Maybe it's just my need for speed, and it's never fast enough?
It is faster than dial-up!

1.5 wasn't horrible - unless you were trying to stream something or watch a Youtube video. Going from 1.5 to 12 was HUGE. The Youtube videos "timeline" (for lack of a better word) would often catch up to the buffering marker and the vid would freeze. Not now. My wife could not believe the instant-ness of web page loads. They were fast before but not instant.
Yup, no going back - one can never return to 1.5 as it is no longer offered to new customers or downgraders. LaDonna, the CSR, admitted that 1.5 speed was "pretty crummy."

I have a feeling the 3.0 speed will soon be discontinued as well. I've only jumped up one speed at a time, maybe I need to go up 2 speeds at a time, LOL!
I think 12 speed is what they recommend for YouTubers?
Now if they could only make 4G faster than Wi-Fi! ![]()

Not sure but (streaming) Netflix said that 5+ would be needed for a decent viewing experience.

I had to go look, and for streaming (SD, what about HD?),18 is recommended.
Check this out on that same page, click on COMPARE DOWNSTREAM SPEEDS (don't forget the fine print, LOL!)

That might explain the data usage when your cell phone can grab something quiker than at home Hint Hint AT&T.

Thanks for that info. SPD. It helped me because, come August, we will have to make a decision. A year ago we were offered one year free upgrade to 18 Mbps service. That period ends on August 15 and, if we take no action our bill will jump up about $10 per month. Of course we both have become spoiled by the very quick loading of web pages and increased download speeds, etc. So there is no disagreement between me and my wife about keeping the higher speed. Then too.....we went to some expense to purchase and install the dual-band wireless router for access to the 5 gHz band. That move helped most of all because we are the only ones in our neighborhood using that band. NO MORE DRASTIC SLOW DOWNS DURING THE EVENING HOURS. Our neighborhood is a virtual "forest" of wireless routers and U-verse service....all on of them on the 2.4 gHz band.....except for us.
ANYWAY...Thanks again for the comparison chart, SPD. It is useful to us in making our decision.
High of 95.9 degrees here today....and high humidity. Hottest day of the year....so far.
Our good friends from Texas, who've been visiting us the past 3 days, headed home this morning. They will soon be moving from Tyler to Arlington where they will have access to U-verse. Currently they struggle along with semi-rural AT&T DSL service and their speed often drops way down to well below 1 mbps download. I think they will be very happy with the service they will receive in Arlington. Their son, across the street from their new location, has U-verse and is quite happy with it.
TIP: Any of you folks that might be looking for a new laptop PC....be sure to check the Staples Office Supply web site and the ad-flyer for this coming week. WOW! Example....HP with 14" screen, i5 Intel processor, 6 gb of RAM, 750 gb HDD, etc. etc. for $479.95 (I think it was). There are others also....big clearance sale and you can purchase the coming upgrade to Windows 8 Professional for $14.95.
We were over on the Kansas side of the state line yesterday....visiting the MicroCenter store. I tell you I can get lost in that place and not come up for air for hours. It makes the urge return again to build my own PC. It's nearly impossible to walk out of there empty handed without having purchased at least one thing.
Well...Enough. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to all you dads. Phil

Glad you found that info useful, Phil. I think they're doing 6 mos. same-as-current-plan pricing now, or that's what I recall from my bill. Call in and get upgraded to the next speed, they'll credit you for 6 mos. so you'll pay what you're paying now. Then you'll have to remember to call back in 6 mos. to drop back down or get another promo.

Speaking of stinging insects... I saw one of these very large black and white wasps go into the end of a piece of the bamboo trellis I made and was working on. Not sure I've seen them before around here before. Looked them up and they're called a Mason Wasp, but it looked pretty intimidating. And this wasp shouldn't be confused with the black/white Bald Faced Hornets and there's plenty of them around here.
Mason Wasp
You'll just have to imagine what it looks like because the word filter found some profane abbreviation in the HTML code for the photo.
And wonder why I hardly post around this forum anymore??
Bald-faced Hornet
Another obscene photo I had to delete!

We get those bald faced hornets around here on occaision. You'll find a volleyball-sized nest (or bigger) on the house or in a nearby bush or tree that sure seemed like it wasn't there two days before. I also see, every so often, what I beleive are either red wasps, or cicada killer wasps. Those thing are freakin huge, usually atleast an inch and a quarter.
Hey Phil, let me check my OEM newsletters, I beleive that WIN 8 upgrade is supposed to be free.

I HATE CICADA KILLERS for what they kill! Cicadas are nice, friendly bugs. ![]()
I like how that article tells you to take note of what they look like, which is a little difficult unless they're dead! We had a wasp that would dive bomb us over the back door. Finally figured out it had a nest behind a strip of faux floral above the door! They had built it over the hook that was hanging the floral and it had to be knocked down to get the hook off!
It didn't look black, but more of a red wasp. And it was mean, the typical kind. Now for the mason ones, I wasn't thinking, mason = brick! There are about 3 mud nests on side of house, but haven't seen any activity, so they must be finished with them and can be knocked down?
I've only been stung once by a wasp and once by a bee, and that was only a few years ago!
Another bug in the garden to be wary of is the Puss Caterpillar/Asp (as we call them in Houston). They can fall out of trees on you, but my encounter was while watering a hanging basket. My hand touched foilage that it was on and pain was unreal! I ended up in the ER because of pain and swelling!
IF you ever encounter one, get some tape and put it over the bites/stings to pull the tiny spines out of your skin. They're more of a white color, though the link says pea-green. Ouch!!!!!

I was trimming my red tip hedges this weekend since they were about 6 ft. tall and I was using a gas powered hedge trimmer. As I was doing my thing I guess a nest had been built inside the hedges and I was lucky enough to come across it. Pretty bad when you have gass powered trimmers darn near over your head and come across something like this. They started coming out from everywhere so I just dropped the hedge trimmer (and ran!!) which ended up sitting on top of the hedge still running. Couldn't get back to it to turn it off. Finally went and got a rake out of the shed and was able to click the shut off switch.
Had to wait about an hour and a half for the wasp to calm down and go back to the nest. Didn't have any wasp killer so I used some WD-40 and squirted that on the nest thru the straw and it worked. Knocked it down with the rake handle and threw it away. You can bet I will be checking for those type things before the next trim!!

I was just going by the local ads that came in the Sunday paper and that I've received on-line. The ones I've seen are all the same......purchase a Win 7 PC now and for $14.95 you can upgrade to Win 8 when it's available. If they get desperate enough to prop up sagging PC sales I imagine they might start offering the upgrade for free.
Right now these problems with E-mail service are driving me insane. Wish I knew what I was doing. I got gMail going and importing my mail from Yahoo/AT&T mail but it did not leave copies behind so now my wife's iPad can't access the E-mail. I'm on the verge of selling all our computers and going back to pen and paper plus snail mail.

Speaking of Cicada Killer Wasps - ours should be hatching in the next few weeks.,
About five years we saw our first. we learned about them, We were fascinated by their lifting power. We accepted the 4-5 nests in our back yard. Now, we disdain them. Last year they built appx. 75 nests and simply decimated our back and side yard.
The wife and I spoke to agronomists, pest experts and so on and they offered no solution. We studied the web and I think that we have a solution. When a nest appears, jab three plastic knives to mark the nest., in the middle of the day Then, about two hours after sunset, pour ammonia down the now marked nests. It kills the live ones and the eggs. Unfortunately "cicada killer waps will be harmed in the making of this ...". well you know.......

A cicada flew out of the garage door wreath right into my face this AM! Didn't see him and couldn't find where he went. One of our anoles had a bug in his mouth yesterday and let us watch him digest it. Natural pest control.
Cicada Killers are scary-looking!
Glad you weren't hurt, BB! I've learned now to even look in hanging baskets before watering as we had a tiny bird nest in one a few years ago!
A few flying roach wings on the back porch last night, guess the raccoons had a late lunch of ones we've killed with spray?

Just walking around is pretty dangerous, huh Spd.? This past spring my son-in-law said that a maple tree seed pod (helicopter / whirlygig thing) hit him right in the eye. About a week later, one helicopter thumped me right in the nose. It actually left a mark. Seriously, lol.
