Rather than bumping the old Win7 thread, I figured I'd start a new one. I found this link that shows that Win7 can actually run on ancient machines:
http://www.techspot.com/news/35164-Windows-7-insta
That said, the performance is slow, but still it works.
This contrasts with Snow Leopard, which can only run on Intel based machines. So Apple has lost the compatability war this time. I wonder what PowerPC users will have to do? Buy new machines?

I can say that in order for a platform to move forward it will have to cut ties with the past with everything moving to multiple cores and 64 bit technology it becomes inevitable to move forward in hardware and the fact that it will not support the legacy machines lightens the load rumor
has it that the intels on the Mac side will gain 5G back in hard drive space. Although Windows 7 RC runs well on my friends old Pentium 4
desktop it screams on his dual core 2 laptop.

The guys over at Headfi.org are using Win7 RC with bootcamp and Parallels having good luck on Leopard but until its in the wild no one knows for
sure on Snow Leopard my guess is it will or it defeats the bootcamp option they are so proud of.

It follows the whole incompetent general public belief. The same thing with OS3. There was a beta, but only devs could use it, not the public
BTW, your son was asking about running 7? I thought he was a strict Apple fanboy?

Things have changed, think I posted in other threads...he can't find a program to do his movie-prop labels, one that works like MS Ofc. Photo Editor. So pretty mad right now. Oz has tried to help, Geniuses have been USELESS, so I'm at a loss to help him. ![]()
He keeps asking about Win7...now that I have the lappy back, I want to wipe it again and install...IF any of my keys are still good! Think they're still handing them out?
Delay was finding an ISO burner, stupid Sonic has known problems and won't even work on desktop now (doesn't do ISO anyhoo); went with Cheetah, burned the disc, need to print out my list of what I need to fix after the install. Maybe I'll run that list by you before I start!

So it sounds like Mac doesn't really come with EVERYHING out of the box?
EDIT: Sorry for the double post.

That's good to know...and about time! Going to be very few programs I'll buy in the future, they just aren't worth it when you can get free (donation) or shareware!
Well, I guess everything is in the box for most people. Too demanding in this house.

For serious photography Aperture 2 would be the choice program on a Mac for me iPhoto does enough and for serious video Final Cut Studio 2 for me
iMovie works good enough but same on a PC for photography it was Adobe CS ( hold on to your wallet) for the professional and since I never played
much with video on a PC not sure what the best option would be.

Adobe is the one they told him he needs, which I find HIGHLY UNLIKELY! Gotta be something simple and free out there, but right now I'm clueless.
What do you think of Boot Camp or Parallels, or that other one...my mind is a blank slate today!
I keep telling the boy to put Win 7 on it and still keep (Snow) Leopard, but he says it will slow the machine, take up too much space.
WHEN is Apple gonna let us Win folks Boot Camp or Parallel THEIR O/S!

I havent used Boot Camp or Parallels, but the choice is based on your needs. If you want full speed Windows, then boot camp is the way to go, but you'll have to restart forst. If you want to avoid restarting, you can use Parallels, but there is an overhead that will reduce the speed.
Here's Apple's info on the two:

That would be like putting a Chevy motor in a Ford or visa versa.

It seems like they would have had a price by now, they must be expensive or they would be advertising a price break like crazy.

Thats above my pay grade but I would think Mac using EFI and Windows using BIOS would be one issue.
Technically Vista and above does support EFI as a boot method. But I'm not sure if it would work on a Mac.
Spd, it doesn't look like it would be possible, unless it is possible to boot Windiws using EFI on the Mac. From what I understand, appparently when the computer is first started up with Windows, the Mac is actually still running in the background to emulate BIOS for Windows. So I would assume that by killling the Mac OS, there would be nothing to emulate the BIOS, thus rendering Windows dead as well.
If it is indeed possible to use EFI and Windows on the Mac, there may be a chance there. I was reading a thing where someone was installing Win7 on their Mac and boot camp picked up both the EFI and the BIOS files on the install disc. But the person installed using BIOS. If I Had a Mac, I would experiment and give it a try. But i have a feeling that there is some kind of safeguard in Boot Camp or the Mac that would prevent EFI fom being used.

So much for that bright idea. ![]()
OK, those prices for 7, looks like no upgrade for XP people?
What about those who want 2 or more licenses?
If I do the RC version, what happens when it goes on sale to the public?
