What are you listening to?

I love discovering new music so let's see what we're all listening to these days.

I listen to music pretty much all day at work via my Zune Pass and the Zune Desktop and when I'm in the car, I listen to my local NPR music station which plays an incredible variety of stuff from local bands to mega super popular groups. 

Some of the stuff in my daily listening lately:

Well, this is refreshing, if I may say so!! But, WHY didn't you reopen R.A.D.A.R.'S CAFE??? The space IS "up for RENT", ya know.

Anyway, you KNOW that I love music..all kinds...so here are some of the things I'm listening to these days..

Joe Bonamassa (just watched his "Live from the Beacon Theater" DVD yesterday! LOVE HIM!!)

Amos Lee (I have all of his CD's..LOVE this guy!)

Eric Bibb (just found out about this guy on YT)

James Morrison (found him on YT, as well)

Foo Fighters (Love these guys!)

JJ Grey and Mofro (YT, too!)

The Smithereens

Hi jam! Yes, it is...I had a copied CD of "Dust Bowl" but ended up buying it since the other one got lost somewhere in the black hole that I seem to have in my house. Lol!

If you get a chance to watch Joe's " Live From The Beacon Theater" DVD, that's also excellent.

There is a new CD of his due to be released on May 22nd. Can't WAIT for that.

They play a mixture of stuff

I'm into mainly House Music, I love 70s disco stuff or Nu DIsco, French House
Oh and Trance music but house is more my thing these days

I just spend time listening to what Radio One play
And it's a mixture I would recommend you listen if ur
Near a pc and have access to your speakers

Radio one play artists like Adele, Florence and the Machine, Nero
Etc which are pretty good

For house Music google hedkandi that's what I love

In the Dallas area, we've got this awesome public radio station focused totally on music. They play everything from super local bands to well known acts with every genre of music. It's a great way to discover new stuff. (http://kxt.org/)

Did you guys ever go to a site called http://archive.org/? It's a site where you can search for music and other things. 

We go pretty often to a local Jazz Cafe to hear the Clarence Spady Band...blues and jazz music. He's a local guy who's been around awhile. The soundman at the cafe told us about the site...and all of his shows, as well as other bands they've had at the cafe over the years, are all stored on this site. Check it out some time... just go to the site and search for someone that you have heard.

You can even download the audio clips. My husband already made me a few CD's from there.

Check out a band called the Southland.  Their album is "Influence of Geometry."  It was released a few years ago, but I only recently discovered this group on Pandora, and it's good enough to remain in fairly heavy rotation at my house.  Not a bad song anywhere on the disc.

(The same people, more or less, who made up the Southland also created the 3-episode musical miniseries, "Dr. Horrbile's Sing-Along Blog," starring Neil Patrick Harris-- kind of a cult fave which also warrants checking out if you haven't heard it.  In their current incarnation, with a slightly different lineup, they've also put out a new recording on iTunes under the name, "Jedd Whedon and the Willing," which I really like too).

Also discovered a "group" (one person, really) called the tUnE-yArDs on Sirius radio last week-- despite their annoying use of alternating upper- and lower-case letters in the band name, I'm kind of intrigued by the eclectic mix of styles found in this group's recordings.  A weird mix of African rhythms, rap influences, pop vocals, even a few jazz hooks and snippets of electronica which have been mixed, re-mixed, and heavily overproduced, to create a sort of completely synthetic alternate musical reality LOL.  The jury is still out on this one... I keep going back and forth about this music, but the Tune-Yards are slowly growing on me-- even as I resist the urge to adopt the capitalization scheme they use in their name.... check them out and let me know what you think!

Guilty pleasure of the week:  Liz Phair.  Yes, THAT Liz Phair.  Always kind of liked her music, even back in the day, although I wouldn't admit it to most of my friends at the time.  Seems like her music has gotten even better with a second listen. Another instance of Pandora telling me that I ought to like something that I'd forgotten that I already liked.  Only this time I'm old enough to have dropped any pretentions about my musical preferences LOL...

Oh yeah, 2 other bands to check out: The Cribs and Atlas Genius.  Just heard these groups within the last couple of days, and I haven't heard much yet, so I can't say much from the limited samples I've listened to.  The Cribs seem to be a British indie band who channel the spirit of the earliest days of punk music-- back when punk was fun, a little dangerous, and nobody took it too serious.  They kind of remind me of the Smiths.  Atlas Genius reminds me of an updated Beck.

I just got a CD (like a real CD!) in the mail of a band called Baboon. It was an album (Face Down in Turpentine) I listened to 15 years ago and really wanted to hear again. I had to order it online because it wasn't available digitally!

Turns out the guy I ordered it from lives no more than 15 minutes from me.

Today I'm listening to Maroon 5's new album Overexposed. 

I like it but I'm not in love with it. Feels mussy and heavy. 

There's a new Offspring album out too, that's next on my list o'things to listen to.

As for Glenn Medeiros, I have heard of him. Nice song too but it's a fairly older song.

Hey, has anyone seen the "How to Train Your Dragon" arena extravaganza?? It's here in my city and my son and I are seeing it tonight. It's supposed to be pretty cool! Check it out on YouTube.
