Currently I have an iPhone 4 and I can customize text ringers for contacts, but only by using the boring tones that come pre-loaded on the phone. In order to use my own custom ringtones, I have to jailbreak my iPhone, which is what I would like to avoid.
Do any of the newer phones (preferably 4G phones) have this capability?
Thanks for any and all replies to this question.

Samsung Infuse 4G
HTC Inspire 4G
Motorola Atrix 4G
I know these are all Android phones, so u are telling me that I would be able to assign custom text ringers to my contacts instead of having one generic tone for every text received?
Thanks so much!!
:-)

I bought a samsung captivate android last wednesday and I still have been unable to assign actual music to contacts for text messages. Ive tried many apps and when you go into the notifications display it has the songs I want in there, actual music, but it still plays the preset tones, which no one can hear them when they go off.

You have to go into the settings for each contact and change it there, not just the app settings.
Also, go into the default message settings and disable notifications.

That is only for the phone call ringtone. Individual text notification tones can only be done through a third party text message application like Handcent. The default android text message application does not support notification tones for specific contacts.

Anndroid154's right, the only 'ringtone' selection that can be made (at least for android devices), is going to your
Message
Settings:
Select Ringtone.
Then selecting only one ringtone that sounds whenever any message arrives (but cant custome at a per contact level). But maybe third party apps could do that for you. Hey if Handcent works for you. Log onto the Android Which apps Do you Have folder and post your results/recommendations!

My fault. I wasn't clear. I meant in the (third party) text message application, not the general phone settings.
In Handcent, in the conversation screen (showing messages back and forth) you will see a settings icon in the top right of the screen (to the right of the contact's name). Tap that and you will get a Personalization popup with Notification Settings as an option. Tap that and you will get a sceen that will have an option to change your Notification sound.
Repeat for each contact you want to assign a specific tone to.
