We added the GMA Pinoy channel to our package at extra cost so that my wife can keep up with things at home. The problem is that often a scheduled recording cuts off the end of a show, this is especially prevelant for the news program 24 Oras and is quite annoying.
Obviously this means that the times for the show in the guide do not match up with the actual show times otherwise the soft padding would cover for this.
Would it not be possible to make the soft padding values something that the user can change with a maximum value of say 10 minutes!?!
Although, if the guide were correct this wouldn;t be an issue. :-(

Actually, you can manually extend the recording by 5, 15 or 30 minutes and also by 1, 2 or 3 hours.

As texasguy37 said, you can extend the shows in the Series recording mode but the soft padding itself is not adjustable, as far as I know. I add time on at least a few shows, such as adding HOURS to most live Motorsports events as rain, cautions and such might add to the event and I normally add an hour or two to most Sunday night CBS programming with NFL, golf and so on, often pushing back the whole night. Then there is the run-on American Idol, "hey our show is so good, we keep it on an extra 3-6 minutes."

Thanks for the replies everyone, I have since discovered the ability for adding time on the end of series recordings so this is a solution for my wifes problems ^_^
But it doesn't address the fact that the guide is not accurate enough.
I am from the UK, living there i used SKY satellite TV, in the event of a program running late or over running the guide was updated in real time and I never experience the end of a program being cut off. You could also adjust the soft padding settings so it's obviously possible.
Maybe ATT should reverse engineer the SKY box software and get some pointers !!

While (whilst?
)I have not had every provider, I do not think that any US providers have real time updating of their guide. I'm a NASCAR fan - if a race is postponed to the next day, there is a 90% chance that the guide will NOT be updated. In fact thewre was a nutjob on this forum about 2 years ago that was screaming to get the "U-Verse Index Corrections Department" busy, correcting the Guide. There is no such person or department, lol.

While this might be possible for something like a singular channel like a ESPN that has no time zone counterparts or affiliates, complications arise when you take into account the programming that follows for local affiliates varies so greatly and timezones
Let's use a presidential address as an example:
210 DMAs (bastically geographic regions serviced by TV stations) x the big four (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX)[ 820 stations to be updated] + timezone offset for live programming + the amount of time the staff at the stations to collect and send out the updates + the amount of staff from a listings services to receive and make the updates + the amount of time needed to push the updates to a provider + the amount of time the provider needs to ingest the new data = impossible.

So, the DVR sets up the recording, but does not record until it sees the tag.
rethink possible!

I have the same problem when I used to have comcast. It was really annoying. It's the GMA pinoy network that doesn't seem to be following their scheduled program. Not sure if they do this intentionally to prevent recording their shows.

While normal affiliate stations provide metadata in their Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) information, it is not updated in real-time. As far as I know, PSIP is strictly an OTA (over the air) architecture.

Sorry ... its just not going to happen in the conceivable future.
