More storage space by resetting DVR?

I have seen this phenomena several times, and I wonder if anyone can tell me what is going on.

I had about 10% storage space on my DVR initially and I recently moved it to another TV. When the DVR finished rebooting the amount of free space jumped to 64%. I also noticed this event happening whenever there was a major firmware update given to the DVR, which resets and reboots the machine. At first I thought that the DVR recorded programs more efficiently after the firmware update, but there seems to be something else going on.

I'm tending to believe that over time the DVR isn't erasing all the data when recordings are deleted and it builds up. Only by resetting the DVR is when all this erroneous data is freed up for storage. If this is the case, the next major firmware update should address this issue automatically or manually...

I'm not sure about that the DVR works perfectly other than that. I was hoping that others have noticed something simular with their DVRs...

I have not observed this happening when I reboot my DVR. I have the Motorola VIP 2250.

I wonder if the power cycle (reboot) is forcing the DVR into some sort of disk management? OR maybe it is going bad or something isn't set up right in your account and maybe the buffer isn't being emptied but it is on a reboot? That is perplexing.

Those are some interesting possibilities. Like I said this is happening over a long period of time. This is probably the first time I have rebooted my DVR this year.
