The main DVR will not record. When I leave the main room and turn off my TV, the dvr turns off too. Now nothing records and non of the recorded shows are viewable. Then when I go to turn the main TV the DVR takes 10 minutes to turn on and some times needs a hard reset. I've have uverse for a few years and this behavior is new, over the last few months.
How do I configure the DVR so this does happen?
Thanks

You've had the service for a while, so your DVR and TV did not both turn off before? I have mine set to do that, saves a stream.
You tried a hard reset...unplugging at the back, plugging back in?
10 min. is way to long to come on. Not getting stuck on the startup screen, or any error messages?

How is the original poster turning off his equipment.... sounds like the actual power/electricity is being turned off (not just the on/off button being pressed), which would cause this situation.

"Ren: Now listen, Cadet. I've got a job for you. See this button? Don't touch it! It's the History Eraser button, you fool!
Stimpy: So what'll happen?
Ren: That's just it. We don't know. Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?"

Either that or one of those power strips with the master outlet that controls slave outlets. When the TV is shut off the slave outlets turn off also.

Hopefully the OP will come back and answer that question.

I am not the original poster, but I am having the same issue. AT&T sent a replacement box, but it too has the same issue. The power strip has always been used in the past and this has just started within the last week. The outlet is not tied to any switch. I can leave the unit on at night and it still shuts completely down during the night and I have to wait 10 minutes for the box to boot up after having to hold down the power button for a few seconds to get it to respond.

You may be having some electrical service issue causing the DVR to shut down due to lack of appropriate power. Or, you could have your second bad DVR. I'm betting on the former rather than the latter. There are monitors that can be plugged in to look for those sorts of things, but I doubt you happen to have one in your closet.
You can try plugging a non-battery backed up digital clock into the power strip with the DVR. If it's blinking when you wake up, then you've found your problem. If it's not blinking, this doesn't necessarily mean that it's not a power problem, but it may not be one the clock is sensitive to.

Negative on the electrical issue. There are several other things plugged into the same outlet/strip that remain working (including a digital clock). Personally, my assumption is an AT&T update that changed something to do with the way the box turns off. Previously, and for as long as we have had U-Verse, things worked perfectly. Now, we don't get any recorded programs during the night and the following day due to this issue. So I am asking, why pay for DVR service when we are not able to record our shows and AT&T doesn't seem to know the answer?

Have you tried unplugging at the back, wait 30 sec. and plug back in? That often fixes most issues; if not, you may need a new DVR. ![]()
