I have had this happen to me a few times and I wondered if anyone else has seen this DVR behavior. I will be watching a show, and have to leave it. I hit the remote's record button and leave. When I return, instead of having the show start from where I started recording it (say, 20 minutes in), I will have the entire show recorded from the beginning. I have had this happen with TV shows and live sporting events, and it appears to be unpredictable. The oddest one was just last week. I missed the first 30 minutes of a hockey game and started recording from that point. Hours later when I was ready to watch, the recording began at the beginning of the broadcast.

The DVR is recording the whatever channel it's on at all times. If you flip to a program (say 10 minutes into it) and decide you want to finish watching it later and hit record, it will only begin recording at the point you changed to that channel. If you started watching from the beginning, it assumes you want to record the entire program.
That is the reason others in this forum and techs we've had in our home tell us to make sure the DVR power button gets shut off when all the other components are shut down. If your green power button remains on, the DVR continues to record whatever channel it happens to be on even if the TV is not on. Thus, it prolongs the life of the DVR to turn it off when not in use.

Thanks for the reply, but that is not the behavior I've noticed. For example, the hockey game instance was one where the TV had been off, and I remembered that the game was on. I turned on the TV switched to NBC saw that the game had already started and watched for about 10 minutes before I decided to record the rest of it. I hit the record button at the end of the first period, but got to watch the game from its beginning. I know that it is recording the station I'm watching while I 'm watching. Otherwise it would not be able to pause and restart the live stream. This is something like looks like buffering somewhere other than inside the STB. And as I said, it doesn't happen all the time.

Because it kept what was already in the buffer from watching it live to the front of where you pressed record.
I've had the same thing happen to me if I don't remember to change the channel and back again then press record. Then it'll start recording at that point only since there will be nothing in the buffer. ![]()

Two thoughts using the scenario above:
Could it be that the hockey game was being watched on the TV attached w/the DVR? Since the DVR does the buffering, if you picked up the game on a TV w/STB, yes, it would pick up the portion buffered
-OR-
Could it be that the TV was off but the STB was on and tuned into the hockey game therefore maintaining the game in the buffer?
My 2 cents. What you do with it is up to you. ![]()

Actually, it happened on the TV connected to what I call the satellite DVR, the one that does not have a disk, and both STBs and TVs are controlled with a single button on the Remote. Both go on and off together.
