As a former Dish Network subscriber, I find that the timers on U-verse are lacking. I would suggest that you all look at the way Dish does it and work on some of their concepts.
I like to record the second showing of alot of shoes (HGTV, Syfy, Food, Travel, etc.) all show their first runs multiple times the first day. By recording it at 1 am instead of 9pm I leave the ablity to record another HD feed from another channel that doesn't. Unfortunately the only way to do this is to set a timer that records first and re-runs which results in many re-reruns being recorded. Here are some suggestions that really shouldn't be hard to implement which will help to elevate the DVR to first class.
Some or all of these features may be there, but I've had this for a few months and can't seem to get these types of timers working.
1. A plain and simple repeating timer (record this channel on this day or weekdays or weekends. So I can say record this channel every Monday at 1 AM or Mon - Friday at 1 AM or everyday at 1 AM.
2. The ablility to record (or at least only keep) the last x aired episodes (versus recorded). That way shows that air re-runs all the time won't record, but it will keep the last 10 most recent episodes.
3. Dish uses "new episodes" versus "first run", this allows for anyshow where the original airing is skipped due to conflict to be recorded at a later time. Last night 15 episodes (14 re-runs and 1 second airing of a first run) of a show recorded so I could get the second airing of a new episode at 1 AM. I then have to delte all the extras. My timer is set to record "first and re-run" at "1 AM" any day. I have no idea why it recorded many episodes all night long.
3. Conflict resolution - Dish does this very well, if there are no timer spaces avialble it looks for the next time the episode is aired and lets you know and will record it then for you. It then can do this every time.
Just some suggestions.

The DVR can only work with the data from the EPG, so if a description is missing or wrong, it can't do anything about that, but record according to its settings.
I do like the idea of the time-shifting when conflicts arise, which is an extension of the series priorities.
Regarding #3, the Comcast iGuide software used to have a "DVR History" function, but it was never anything but a list of your past programs you deleted and when. However, in the situation you describe, something like the DVR History could be used to avoid re-recording the reruns you've already watched in a series record.
Microsoft needs to get some of these ideas implemented into the MediaRoom software.

So, it would be good to have a recurring recording specified only by time. It would also be good to specify a show at a specific time, only. And, lets not forget we should also be able to specify weekdays only.
I have not accidentally erased a recording in a long time, but I still think a show should be available to be revived until the space is required.

Have a hunch all of those features are patented by Dish (or stolen from Tivo) and are not available for Uverse unless a totally different solution is found. Even if not exactly designed the same way, courts generally find a patent infringement on a patented feature. ![]()

Patents eventually expire, and hopefully this is one that will expire soon.

Unluckily patents usually expire 20 years from the filing date, so in technology, things are usually obsolete by the time patents expire. ![]()

Went into public trials late in 1998 in San Fran and introduced in 1999. So the patents probably will expire in 2018 or 2019. ATT is currently being sued by TiVo for it's use of Series Recordings saying it infringes on the patent of TiVo's Season Passes. ;)

I figured someone would come up with some info about this. Good job.

Tivo may be on their last legs, so i bet one lucky provider will win the rights to buy their patented goodies.
