I HAVE JUST SUBSCRIBED TO UVERSE AND HAD IT INSTALLED THIS PAST FRIDAY AND NOW I REALIZED I MADE A DRASTIC ERROR IN GOING WITH UVERSE! LET ME EXPLAIN, I HAVE ALWAYS USED THE TIVO SYSTEM TO RECORD PROGRAMS DUE TO MY WORK HOURS AND INABILITY TO VIEW DESIRED TV PROGRAMS. UVERSE WORKS FINE AND PROGRAMING IS GREAT.... BUT IT HAS AN UNDESIRED FEATURE FOR ANY TIVO USER. IT GOES INTO "STAND BY MODE" IN 4 HOURS OF INACTIVITY!! I AM TOLD ACTIVITY CONSIST OF SOME INTERACTION BETWEEN THE REMOTE AND THE RECEIVER WITHIN THAT 4 HOUR PERIOD! SO.. I NOW HAVE TIVO RECORDINGS OF "PRESS OK TO CONTINE"
.
PER TECH SUPPORT THERE IS NO WAY TO DEACTIVATE THIS STAND BY MODE FEATURE!

While I can understand the desire to use technology that you already own (specifically the Tivo), why not get a U-Verse DVR to record the shows? It works quite well, does not need to be active to be able to record, and is designed to work with all features of the U-Verse service seemelessly. Further, it can record up to four shows at a time (Tivo, if I recall correctly, records only two shows at a time).
As for the timeout, in my experience of three years of service, the set-top box turns itself off after eight hours of inactivity rather than just four but whatever the case, the problem is that it does timeout and makes the Tivo a less than optimal solution.

The screen saver pops up after 8 hours of inactivity with the stb. But that is beside the point. The only way around this issue is to record your programs on the Uverse DVR. Or, if possible, press the info button before you leave home. That way you will have a good chance for your Tivo to catch the shows you have scheduled to record.
