Installation of TV and Internet? Can I do it myself?

Looking to purchase Uverse for TV and Internet. Can I do the whole installation myself or do I need to have a tech come to my house? I'm a computer guy so have installed routers and such before.

No.  In some instances, self installs of U-verse internet are available; however, there is no self install for U-verse TV.  A U-verse TV installation must be done by a technician,

I assume Uverse takes advantages of the current coax in my house, so no new wires need to be run. Is that correct?

I currently have Time Warner. Do I need to cancel Time Warner prior to installing Uverse or can I keep Time Warner going, install Uverse and then cancel Time Warner?

nimsu - Yes, the standard install is reuse existing wires. If they prove to be unusable some replacement runs can be included.

Usually, the existing coax is cut at the entry to the house & the rest is reused. If you want to go back to the old way you would have to reconnect it at the one cut.

If you want to keep the existing service, in parallel, for comparison, it gets complicated.

I think it is recommended not to cancel the old service until the new is working for you.

That is what I did & would do again if I am in that situation.

i see you are concerned about the install. You should be able to talk to the installer. Decide what you want. Maybe even draw a sketch. Show the layout  of the house & either ask if he can do what you want or ask what he recommends. You do not have to do anything you do not want. Get agreement, just be efficient to save the installers time.

I have UVerse TV, the u450 package with 6 recievers. Also decided to keep my Comcast internet and phone. My internet package comes bundled with basic cable which runs to a guest bedroom and to 3 Mediacenter PCs.

My installer had absolutely no problem seperating the various wires in the existing Comcast junction box to accomplish the installation.

In any case, I wouldn't cancel your existing service until the installation if UVerse is completed. Sometimes it does take multiple techs and days to get everything running perfectly.

We moved into a newly built house on Friday and it took the installer about 6 hours to install the iNID and the two extra cable drops in rooms that didn't have them. Luckily I have lots of room in our attic and he didn't have any problems with the installation.

Really, I'm on my 3rd place with UVerse and have had no issues.  Millions of customers have no issues or when they do have a problem it is handled quickly and effeciently.  Is AT&T perfect? No. but no provider is.  I've had issues with Dish, Direct and TWC.
