So I have 5 public IPs for a while now but I am only using 1. I run a mail server, FTP server and web server. So I have the following ports open on my 2 wire router: 80, 443, 21, 25, 110, 465, 995. Everything was working great and then a few days ago around 3 am EST all my ports except 80, 443, and 53 (DNS, not using it but found it would open from my debugging the problem) got blocked. No matter what I did no other ports would work including moving the server to the router DMZ. Also the server could no longer be pinged unless it was in the DMZ where before I could ping it. there is a config to allow pinging on the router it no longer works either.
So I call AT&T customer service. Wow how absurd, unprofessional, lack of education, and lack of intelligence can a company and its employees be. First off they blame me and my network from, the get go. Second all the sudden they need to unblock 25 which they said will unblock 110 too. Why would they need to do this it was working fine. Well AT&T blocked my ports. But CS swaers AT&T doesn't block any ports. OH but now there is an exception they block 25 oh wehich also blocks 110. Are we starting to get the picture here. So now my 25 and 110 work too but nothing else. But CS swears up and down AT&T doesn't block any ports and its my fault. They cannot get on my router to verify my config (which I know is right whether I do pin holes or put the server in the DMZ same results). They are supposed to be able to but they cannot tell which routers they can get on and which ones they cannot. Unbelievably ignorant and unprofessional there is no excuse for that kind of problem which runs rampant in the AT&T network it a coin flip if they can get on your router. Also they would not take the time (the real deal IMHO is they don't know how to) to verify the ports are blocked. They also would not try to unblock one. OK don't try to stand up for them and say that CS doesn't have the capability thats AT&T's responsibility to put me in contact withe the correct level of person who can perform these basic networking tasks.
So now since they will not fix the problem I have no choice but to drop my service and go to another provider. Which means I am dropping a $200/month bill I pay. Good for me I guess. Bad for them not that they care.
I have never felt so helpless and so degraded and so disgusted with a company in my life.
Also go to ATT.COM and use the website. That right therer will all the errors and slowness and hangs shows us how terrible a provider AT&T is and how much they could care less.
Well I vented and shared with the community my terrible experience with a company that no longer supports its customers or even cares. My new provider installs tommorrow wish me luck. I have a feeling our choices of providers that do not block ports and/or run crappy filters and various other haneous networking practices is growing shorter. This does not represent the Internet and how it was founded for open and free access. I hope AT&T chokes on their own practices.
