Why does U-Verse not want its battery power box & modem returned when an account is cancelled?

It means ATT doesn't want those items, they are yours to keep. The BBU was essentially yours since when the battery needed to be replaced, you would have to buy it ($150).
Having a an i38HG means you have an Inid outside or in a Garage that contains the 2wire RG 3800 HGV (actually a 3802 in the iNid).

The gray box above is the iNid. that's what they want back. If there is a phone # to call about this, ask them about the iNid
